[For repowering a 1991 Boston Whaler MONTAUK 17, there exists] a chance to get an almost new [Yamaha] 90-HP two-cycle motor [at a] great deal instead of going to [a Yamaha 90-HP four-cycle motor]. [Reply with your opinion] on the option.

Re-powering a Boston Whaler MONTAUK is probably the most often discussed topic in PERFORMANCE, but the advice is seldom if ever exhausted. Here we have a choice between old and new.

The Yamaha 90-HP two-cycle is a classic motor, with all the good and bad features of classic two-cycle motors with carburetors.

The Yamaha 90-HP four-cycle is an early four-cycle outboard motor design with a some advantages, and some notable disadvantages. This was one of the first mid-horsepower range four-cycle motors to come to the market. As four-cycle motors have been evolving, the Yamaha 90-HP four-cycle has been displaced as the competitor motors have become lighter, small, more reliable, and better performers.

Price is always a factor, even among potential buyers who declare that price does not matter. It is hard to resist the less expensive option.

Many factors will influence my recommendation on which motor to get. I need to know more about:

--how many hours per year to you plan to use the motor;

--what type of boating will you be doing; will you spend a lot of time at low speed operation such as trolling;

--what type of water will you be operating in;

--how many people will be aboard most of the time, and how much gear.

Would you want a large screen projection TV or a LED TV for a few bucks more? You are talking 1970's technology vs today for a few dollars. Resale is a big factor as well.
