My 1996 Outrage 19 has a fix mounted Mercury 9.9 4stroke for trolling. The motor has a 9x9 prop and does fine at 5 mph, but pops and misses when trolling between 2-3 mph. Could this be because of engine over loading? Is the prop pitch to high for low RPM operation? Would I get a usable speed range of 2-6 mph if I replaced with a 9.75 x 5.5 work boat prop?

You need the work boat or sail prop. You are not getting enough rpm so you might be building up carbon. |

Not sure about carbon build up in 4 strokes. I did think I needed to clean the carburetor jets. Not sure what RPM the 9.9 gets to, it does not have gauges. I’ll try the lower pitch prop. Aside from the extra weight, having the kicker is great, very low fuel consumption. This season, I probably used it more hours than the primary engine. |

Yes 4 strokes build up carbon. Never had an engine "diesel" on you after you shut off the key? That is the carbon on top of the pistons that is red hot with drops of gas hitting it so it runs off the same principal as a diesel but does much more harm. |
