I have a 1991 Evinrude 30-HP outboard on my Standard 13. I just bought this rig, and yesterday evening was the first time I had the engine cowling off. I was kind of surprised to see no cover on the carb. I was expecting some kind of plastic screen. I went and looked at the parts breakdown on iBoats, and didn't see one there: http://www.boats.net/parts/search/BRP/EVINRUDE/1991/E30TELEIC%201991/ CARBURETOR%20-%2025-30/parts.html Does anyone have a similar engine that could tell me if there should be some kind of screen/cover on the carb? It looks like there are 4 threaded holes on the front of the carb. Thanks!

Prior to 1982, the 32 cubic inch 25/35 HP Evinrude/Johnson had a plastic air silencer in front of the carburetor. 1982 and after there was nothing in front of the carburetor. |

Not true...there is usually never a cover in front of the carb if manual start. If it has electric start it is required to have a "flame arrestor" in front of the carb to keep you from blowing up. |

My 1977 manual start Johnson 35 had a plastic air silencer in front of the carb. |

sorry bigshot, no requirement for a flame arrester on an outboard. no enclose engine space. my '84 johnson 35 (electric) doesn't have it, our '99 johnson 30 (electric) and neither did a friends 25. not shown in any parts diagram. it was dropped after 82 as stated. |

Ditto goldstem. These parts are not flame arrestors. They are "intake silencers" which are designed to mitigate 2 stroke "intake roar." If you come across one from a earlier engine cheap that can be put on yours, I'd do it. It'll likely make you engine somewhat quieter. As I mentioned in another thread, the older OMC engines intake silencers were often quite elaborate. Some of them made big differences. For some reason, Mercury never used them in their older engine designs and in my opinion older Mercs tended to be considerably louder than similar period OMCs. Merc would however often position extra sound absorbing material some distance away, but in front of the carb throats. You'll see this technique used on certain OMC 2 cylinder engines as well. |

I have a 1997 30hp Evinrude and it has no carb cover of any kind, and near as I can tell this motor is stock (very little use since new). |

Sorry I was going by my OMC 15's. The manual starts do not have a carb cover, the Electrics did. My 87 20hp manual does not but my 82 35 electric did. |
