How well does the 1994 Outrage 17 perform? How does it compare to the c.1980 Outrage 18 or a c.1980 Montauk? [The author tells us he is] considering selling my 1988 Outrage 22 and repowering and using an 1994 Outrage 17.

Fina--I purchased a 1993 Outrage 17 last year. It performs very well for my needs. I respectfully suggest you utilize the 'search' function for opinions of this vessel vis-a-vis the Outrage 18 and Montauk. There is a lot of discussion in this regard. Bob

I have owned a 1991 Outrage 17 for 5 years having sold a 1987 Montauk. For its size, hands down a significant improvement in ride, storage and ergonomics compared to a Montauk. The Outrage 17 handles seas far better than a Montauk but does not have the beam of an Outrage 18. This makes the Outrage 17 slightly tippy.

The Outrage 17 does not tolerate a heavy motor. A 402-lb Yamaha 115-HP causes the stern to squat significantly. Try to keep the weight down to 375-lbs and move the battery to the console.

I know a dozen owners so let me know if you need more input and I will ask them to join the thread.

I am running an E-TEC 115 on mine and very happy with it, no problems getting on plane, approximately 45-MPH maximum, slight porpoising but easily controlled with power trim, 390-lbs.

I've had my 1995 Outrage 17 since 2005. It has a 2004 Mercury 90-hp 4-stroke (386 lbs). While I do think the motor is a bit heavy for the boat, it performs fine. It would benefit from a set of trim tabs at times, but I can't bring myself to drill that many holes in the transom. For the boat's size I wouldn't call it "tippy" (sorry Phil). It does tend to rock back and forth a bit though compared to a Montauk due to the V hull which greatly improves ride. I've had it out many times in weather a 17' boat shouldn't be out in and it has performed well. I had to do something pretty stupid to make it feel like it would roll. I've hauled skiers/wakeboards/tubes before with 5 or 6 adults in the boat (most of the weight up forward). A classic Outrage 18 is a bit more stable, better ride, etc, but it's also bigger all around and requires a larger motor.
The Outrage 17 is a much smaller boat then an Outrage 22 though and it will feel that way. As much as I love my Outrage 17, there are days when I'm wanting a late model Outrage 22. I wish I could have both.

thank you for all of your insightful responses. Please keep them coming. I have a 1999 115 merc on the boat so I'll test it this Spring. I'll position the battery forward as recommended.

I have a 1994 17' outrage with a 115 yamaha 2-stroke.The boat performs well with the 115 and it sits fine at static and runs in the low 40's at WOT.I have had it in nasty seas and it handled them well.It is a great looking classic.
