I've just re-powered my 1987 TEMPTATION 2500 with twin [SUZUKI] 175-HP engines. [Who was the] maker and [what] type of steering box is under the steering wheel? Mine is leaking oil and [I] think about changing [the helm pump]. [Thanks] in advance. |

The 1987 Boston Whaler boat I owned with original factory installed hydraulic steering used Teleflex SEASTAR components for the helm pump. |

It is very common for hydraulic helm pumps to leak some hydraulic steering fluid from the steering shaft seal. I wrote and illustrated an article that describes in detail how to remedy this problem and published it in the REFERENCE section. I will give a hyperlink to it: Teleflex Helm Pump Seal Replacement I recommend you verify that the front shaft seal is good before probing for other leaks. |

A Whaler Drive boat with twin 4-stroke engines should be set up with Teleflex Sea Star II helm pump and twin side mount cylinders. You can see what the installation looks like in this video clip: http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v429/lgoltz/Outrage%2025/?action=view& current=MVI_0147.mp4 Boston Whaler did not use the front mount cylinders on Whaler Drive models because of clearance problems. Don't let someone talk you into this! They all came from the factory with either a single or twin side mount cylinders. If you have the single cylinder Sear Star I helm, as Jim states, the usual cause of leaking is a simple shaft seal, easy to fix. On a twin installation, the single cylinder is installed between the engines. You can see that kind of an installation in the last photo of this article by Jim: http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/standardTransomBracket.html With twin counter rotating engines, the cylinder can be installed in the port engine with no modifications to the tilt tube necessary. |
