Hey everyone i'm looking at getting my first Whaler and it's a 1989 Revenge WT with a 1989 200 Hp Merc Offshore two stroke. I'm wondering if anyone else has had this combo? Is this motor reliable or is it the same as most oil injected motors and i should be leary of that system? Is it a pig on gas? I'm going to be using this boat as a salmon boat on Lake Ontario. Thanks for any info and this site is great!

It will be easier to answer your questions if you tell us which 1989 REVENGE W-T you happen to have: 20-foot? 22-foot? Or, 25-foot? |

I recently bought an '87 Revenge WT with a Johnson 200. It was thirty like Charlie Sheen. You could see the needle move. It now has an E-TEC 150. |

Thanks for the info. I'm gonna go and look at it again and if he comes down enough in price i'll just repower it. Thanks |

I had a brand new pair of Mercury 200HP Counter-rotating Offshores (carbureted) on my brand new 1989 Outrage 25. I had no problems with them at all (except for one needing a stator replacement), they were powerful and fast, and the oil injection worked perfectly. They were so good, and looked so good, that at 2200 hours each (per hour meters) they got targeted and stolen by thieves 8 years later. It is pretty much impossible for any of us "armchair experts" to determine how good and well maintained a 22 year old used engine is. How well it's been maintained cosmetically can tell you a lot, for a start. If it looks like a beater, it probably is. |

Thanks for the tips. I'm heading out this weekend for a test drive and a good look at this boat. Hoping it works out. |

Well i couldn't pass up this boat as I figured it was a good price for a hardly used boat. I took it for a test drive and it ran great. I towed it the four hours back home and took it out again the next day and that 200 Merc really sucks the gas! Gonna put all my electronics on it and add a top and tower and riggers and it should be ready to go salmon fishing! Thanks guys |

Glad to hear you made a nice purchase. If you think the 2.4 liter Merc uses fuel, you should be lucky the boat didn't come with a 3.0 liter OMC 200 (as many did). They were real fuel hogs.JimH used to have a 20 Revenge, with twin 70HP Yamahas. Even with the reduced total of only 140HP, it only got about 2.5 MPG and top end of 37 MPH. So you're probably doing OK with the Merc 200. |

Thanks for the info LHG. I'm gonna use it as is till it's paid off. For salmon fishing up here in Ontario I only go about 5 km before shutting off the main motor then troll the whole day on the 15 hp kicker. When I repower I'm thinking of a 150 four stroke of some kind or another as I don't often peg the throttle anyways so don't really need any great speed. Thanks |

Once you put a top/tower on it you might need the extra hp. |

Will a bimini top and aluminum tower add that much weight? I rarely go flat out anyways and never really have to go further then 10 km to fish. Thanks |
