I have a 17 standard witha realy nice 1999 90 2 stroke. It hits 50 plus mph. till you neglet it with gas ethenol. Been in the shop for 2 weeks and going to repower with a new 375lb opti. Every dealer that sells all three says once you have a black engine on a 17, you will be sick with the etec or any of the 4 strokes. if you are worried about the extra 75lbs, move the tank forward.

I have run 17 Whalers at various times with all of the Mercury 90hp models...from the 2 stroke inline 6, the 3 cylinder 2 strokes and lately, the 4 cylinder LNA 90hp FourStroke. The boat will handle them all without concern.
I have been a 2 stroke fan for over 30 years.....but I must say I am warming up to the 4 strokes and it's now a tough call between the Opti and the new 4-strokes.
Frankly, I don't think there is a new 90hp of any brand that you wouldn't like on that boat. If properly setup....the old inline 6 Merc 2 stroke would still probably have the fastest top speed as well as the highest fuel consumption and the most noise !!

Barnacle, near as I can gather from reading the other repower threads recently, you would be one of, if not the first from here to choose an Optimax over an E-TEC, to repower a classic 17.

sosmerc, any performance numbers from the newly installed Mercury 90hp FourStroke on a classic Montauk?

I couldn't have said it better myself. That SUZUKI DF90 is a runner. The TOHATSU TDLI 90 is a runner, too.

I have heard this also. The Df 90 Suze weighs about 25lbs more than the etec 90 and 30lbs less than the opti. The only negitive reports about some Suzes is vapor lock in the warm Texas Gulf waters. Apparently the dealers are not allowed enough time to install an electric pre engine fuel pump. Does anyone know which model is having the problem? I do not want to leave Merc for a different problem.

A DFI motor can vapor lock? What are they, 1000-3000 psi in the rail?

Suzuki is EFI, not DFI.

WT, I am sorry that I don't have more data. Our season is about over here and the customer is not using the boat. I wish we had taken more time to get some numbers to report.
All I can say is that my gut feeling is the performance will be very comparable to other late model 90 hp engines. I mounted the engine quite high, yet it seemed to like it, even with the aluminum 21 pitch Black Diamond prop.
I look forward to hearing some reports on the new 4 blade aluminum props (Spitfire Series) that are due out soon.

Thats an additional 75 lbs for the same HP.
That's allot of extra weight on the stern.
I would have chosen a lighter replacement, probably the
E-Tech, or Tohatsu.

Tom sez;

(Very impressive.)

I agree, I'd like to see that.

I have a gutted and stripped, 16' v-hull with a "fast" bottom, that weighs about half what a 17' Whaler weighs. It goes about 55mph on a good day... with a prop-rated 115hp. A classic 17 Whaler doing 50+ with 90hp is very impressive indeed. In my limited experience as a boater.
