Hi all--[I am] about to re-power my 22' Guardian. The V8 Johnson 250 has about had it, and I'm tired of the fuel bill. I've come across a Yamaha F225 for a fair price. Anybody running one? Curious of the stats I'll be getting myself into. The four-cycle is about 35-lbs heavier. Don't think that'll be a problem. It's either that or an E-TEC 300. It I'm not certain I can get my hands on it but will be working parallel path. Thanks for the info.

What year is the Yamaha F225? Several years back the Yamaha F225s reportedly had internal corrosion problems. If you're looking at a used engine, I would suggest that you do some research on that issue. If you're looking at a brand new engine, I believe the problems have been remedied.

Yeah, there is quite a bit of info out there about engine blocks corroding on all the big F model Yamahas.

Is your Guardian a full transom model?

If so I would look at the 300hp models, even though they are more hp than your old Johnson, they will be be much better on fuel that that V8 pig. You can have a better cruise speed and better fuel economy at the same time.

The Suzuki 300 has had good reviews, along with the Yamaha 300 and E-Tec 250 and 300.

Stop by your local dealers and see who you want to do business with. Even though Suzuki makes a good motor finding a dealer close may be an issue

What type of technology are you looking for? I know people who are running Optimax and [E-TEC] on their 22's [without] any complaint. If I were re-powering, I would think about the new Yamaha offshore series. Though it has a huge footprint and might look a little strange hanging off the back of the boat, the power and fuel efficiency should be nice. Lighter than the previous [motors]. I know a guy [with] a 22 and the older, heavier, F200 Yamaha, and he loves it.

[I am] looking [for] a used 2008 F225 with less than 350 hours. [I am] not ready to blow [$20,000] on a new motor just yet. My boat is not full transom--wish it was--and already sits heavy in the [stern]. [I am] mainly looking to see if someone already has an Outrage or Guardian with the F225. [I am] curious as to what cruise speed, WOT, and fuel consumption they're getting with it. I appreciate the response. Times are tough when the boat is sitting still this time of year.

With the heavier Guardian hull expect to see WOT speeds in the mid 40's with the Yamaha. I get high 40's with a 225 Evinrude on my 22 and it has a radar arch and heavy kicker slowing me down a bit

I know the full transom 22's were rated for 300hp, is yours rated for 300 or 240?

Teak Oil--There were standard notched transom 22 Guardians that had the reinforced transom option for 300-HP. We had one of those hulls (now owned by another member here), and it was powered by Mercury 2.5 liter V6 150's.

Most of the 300-HP-rated Guardians I have seen were set up with the same options as ours: the large aluminum Battle console, extra wide aluminum gunnels and all of them had the full width transom splash gate. This is a must as without the splash gate you would always have water on the decks if you were trolling and idling in 1-foot or greater seas.

Several years (Ft) Lauderdale Marina had a 22 Guardian for sale, with 30" transom, and with a Merc version of the 225 Yamaha 4-stroke. The engine looked fine on the boat.

Just yesterday I saw a brand new 22 Guardian owned by the Chicago park District, and powered with a 250 Verado. Nice looking rig.

I can see why the full splash gate would be necessary on a 22 without a Whaler Drive and twins, that's almost 1000lbs of outboard on the back. With a big single it would not be nearly as bad however.

A 225 on this hull to me feels merely adequate as far as planing, power, and top speed. If you have the means to get a 300 however, and there are a lot of them available used, I would definitely go that route.
