In 2007 I agonized over re-powering my 1979 Montauk. For 28 years I lived with a Mercury in-line six-cylinder 90-HP and a 1998 Mercury 100-HP two-cycle outboard engines. After a lot of help from this site and a ton of research. I settled on a Suzuki DF70 four-cycle outboard engine--without a doubt the best decision I could have made. Boating these last five years is again enjoyable. Maintenance and fuel costs are half. The only trips to dealer have been once-a-year annual maintenance. Oher motors about four to six non-routine trips to shop annually. I can get almost twice the fishing trips now than before on the same tankful. This Montauk is heavy, two 12-gallon tanks, twin batteries, electric trolling motors, plus a casting platform. The 35-MPH top speed is less that the 100-HP now, but [the MONTAUK] cruises at 3,900-RPM engine speed and 24-MPH boat speed near sea level lake in Arizona--all I need. Fishing is a whole different experience because [the Suzuki DF70] starts so quickly without fail I can drift much closer to shoreline obstacles and can even cruise and cast shorelines while the motor ticks quietly away. I can troll all day without a hitch; before trolling was problematic. My records show the motor will pay for itself in less than two more years. I am the original owner of the Montauk and used it in the ocean off California, many trips to Catalina Island and the channel Islands. I restore the boat and its teak annually, and I have tried to maintain the Montauk in new condition. This boat will stay in the family for the grandkids to enjoy. Thanks for a great and helfpful site. I have not posted in several years.

Thanks for the feedback on the Suzuki DF70 re-power of your classic Boston Whaler MONTAUK. The DF70 seems like a very good match for the MONTAUK, and I have seen that combination in use before. |

Of the dozen Yacht Club power boats we utilize, our smaller three are 17ft. Whalers with that same motor. These boats are really used and abused, and they perform very well with that combination(and have for 4-5 years now). Personally, I'd prefer a little more power, but it seems to be a good set-up. |
