No min 15 up. Watch the old flipper movies I don't think thats a 10 Mercedes wheeling Bud & Sandy around.I think it was a 20. I had a 15 Omg on a 13 and it would barely plane myself and it barely plane myself and my little son.A 25 is a perfect litle motor for a 13

Binks - I ran my 11.5 w/ 9.5 Johnson a few times - tiller . I could get it to plane but I had to move toward center of the boat (amidships) to do it. Once on plane it would hold pretty well and I could sit back down. I used a handle extension and rope off the bow eye to balance myself. It was kinda fun. I later put a 25 Johnson on it. Voooommmmmmmmm!!!!!!!!!

I always wanted an 11 for my kids I seriously think it is a lot lighter than 13. I know a 2 stroke will run circles around a 4. I still say 15 is min. But 25 is perfect

I am pretty wild but I would never turn a kid loose in a 11.5 w/ 25 ponies unless s/he demonstrated serious ability and responsibility. It's like a high speed surfboard and fun as hell but it can throw ya. Mine has two sets of oar locks (I think) - they'd have to prove they can handle all that, wear PFDs and kill switch lanyard 100% of the time.

Would I have followed those rules when I was a kid? Hell no - Like my old man told me "Life is all about good judgement and decisions you make. Now that you're 13 when you go down the street and around the corner I got no idea what you are doing or what you're going to do. So here's my rules: 1) If you do something don't get caught and 2) I don't ever want to see my name in the paper..." Good enough for me and what I've told kids around me.

For what it's worth my .02;

Depending on kids age and if they have good judgement/experience I'd get them a good set of oars and a low HP outboard with proper length shaft understanding that boat does NOT need to plane if they are inexperienced. I also think learning w/ tiller is very important. Good luck and have a lot of fun.

Better yet - send your kids to the Binkster School of Race Boats and Golf. He'll have them in a little hydroplane in 20 minutes. When he gets done with them they will be able to run anything.

I thought we were talking about a 10 on a 13. With 2 people a 15 would work a 10 not. My kids lived with a 25 on a 13. No one got hurt but never would I put/an over powered boat in the hands of kids. It would be criminal!

I would say, it depends. I had a Yamaha 2-stroke 15 on my 1969 13 and it could plane with two adults and two kids (total about 550 lbs.). I think a 9.8 could have planed the same boat, but it might not have on another 13.

I have been in 13' whalers with 15hp and they have adequate performance for what you are looking for. I think if you going to regularly have that load in your boat, I think the 9.8 will be too small.

As a kid we had a 12' wooden boat with a 8 hp motor it would plane 2 adults and a kid, but if the condition weren't right, i.e. too windy, too choppy, too much current, too hot, too much gear... it wouldn't plane with that load, you would have to either go in the opposite direction to plane or just suffer going under 10mph. Sometimes it would take a 1/4 mile to plane. My dad later got a 15hp motor and that has made a huge difference, he can load the boat up with a max of 4 people and gear and it still planes. He usually only uses the boat with 1 or 2 people but he now wishes that he had put the 15 on it from the start.

FYI I was looking through one of the old whaler catalogs from the 70's and they list the top speed of a 13' whaler with 10 hp as 16mph.
