I'm getting ready to mount a 1989 Johnson 110 on my 72 smirkless 17. It appears to me it will have to be mounted at least 2 holes up in order to get the lower bolts in the splashwell. I've done some searching and the recommended seems to be 1 hole up. I'd rather not use the blind holes because I'm contemplating a new motor within a couple of years so I'll need the standard pattern anyway. Will 2 holes up be a problem?

Depending on the propeller used you may well be better off with it mounted three holes up.

You are on the right track though; dill the holes in the transom according to the BIA standard bolt pattern *except* the lower bolt holes should be 6-1/2 inches below the top holes instead of 8 inches.

This will allow the lower mounting bolts to clear the splashwell and the motor can be mounted either Two Holes Up or Three Holes Up.
