I am looking at buying a used auxiliary motor for my 1986 Revenge [25] W-T. I have come across an opportunity to buy a 2008 Yamaha 15-HP in almost brand new condition. Would it fit for my boat for trolling? Or, could I make it work with the right propeller? Or, is the performance of a Yamaha 9.9-HP High Thrust a better fit? Thanks--mike

The 9.9 HT will be plenty for your Outrage. I have a T8 high thrust on my 22 Outrage and it is great for trolling.

Look at the weight difference of the 15 and the 9, if they are nearly the same then it should be okay (make sure it is a long shaft). The 9.9 is no lightweight, especially if it has power trim and electric start like mine, it will be in the 120# range.

The 9.9 would be a better fit, but if the weight is the same and their is a significant cost savings the 15 do the job nicely as well. Both will push the boat to the same speed, but the high thrust prop is very responsive, that big ear prop allows the motor to idle nice and slow and in reverse can stop the boat very quickly with a blip of the throttle.

Sorry I said Outrage instead of Revenge. If you have a 22 the 9.9 will still do the job well.

I have a Revenge 25 W-T. Will a 20-inch shaft be the right length? Thanks, Mike.

I believe 20-inch would be fine, that's what my 22 has.

For a 25 the smallest kicker that would be practical is a 9.9. I believe a 15 with a high thrust pontoon propeller would be a better fit though. Weight is not as much of a [concern] on a 25.

Often the small outboard engines in the 9-HP range that are fitted with specialized propellers will give better performance as an auxiliary engine than the similar 15-HP model which may be built more for high-speed operation of small boats. I had a friend who bought the 15-HP model as an auxiliary for his sailboat, and he always regretted it. He often said he should have purchased the 9.9-HP model designed for use as an auxiliary, rather than the 15-HP model which was not particularly engineered for use as an auxiliary. The 15-HP did not like to run at low speeds and came with a propeller that did not produce much thrust at low speed operation.

Check to gear ratio of the engine you are considering. Also check the availability of suitable propellers. You will want a low-pitch propeller that can produce good results at low speeds.

There is a very nice article describing the installation of an auxiliary engine on a classic Boston Whaler in the REFERENCE section. See:

Small engines designed for use as auxiliary engines also often have improved battery charging circuits that can deliver more power for battery charging.

As I recall, the author of that article, John, told me that his boat handled better at slow speeds with the small auxiliary engine than it did with the larger engine, particularly when making sternway. The article above also contains links to other articles about auxiliary engines that you may find interesting.

The boat Jim is referring to is mine and it has a 6 amp maximum charging circuit, about the same as what my 90hp Evinrude had on my old Montauk. Even at idle it maintains the batteries well. Starting and stopping is great with a high thrust prop, the response is great if you give the engine a little gas. Turning with the kicker engine only is not so great, even with the main engine down. In tight maneuvering quarters I prefer to use the 225. This would probably be even more pronounced on a 25ft hull.

15's like Mercury's Pro Kicker have high thrust props and a 12 amp charging system, but it will be considerably more expensive I imagine.

A Yamaha F15 is not the ideal kicker for a 25 foot Whaler. You want a T8 (no longer made) or a T9.9. These are Hi-Thrust models designed for kicker applications and use very large (relative to horsepower) propellers.

The T8 with power tilt would be my first choice. You want a 20" (Long) shaft length. They pop up regularly on craigslist in the PNW for between $1500 and $2000, though can be bought for less occasionally.

Ok, I passed on the 15hp Yamaha as kicker motor. I went to look at it today and it ran great. It looked brand new. I made a low offer, but the owner would not take it. A local shop said it could have worked and suggested a new prop. Now, it is off to look for a used 9.9hp High Thrust Yamaha. I have been looking and can't find any in the Seattle area. I guess I will be a bit more patient.

Thanks, Mike

be sure you get an "elephant ear" propeller-big diameter, shallow pitch.

Here a nice example of a T8:

A little too pricey, but hey, everything is negotiable.

Frogrock, you want a prop that looks like the one in Tom's photo of the T8
