One thing I notice is that all the surviving boats shown seem to be missing the rear railing, which was standard (at least on the 1970 model).

Perhaps the railing wasn't too popular with Menemsha owners and they removed it.

What cool boats they are....I've never seen one before and still can't pronounce it properly. Nice to have some history and photos. The cabin is unusual on a small craft and nice to escape the elements. Just another innovative idea from the folks at BW.

Jim nice job with upgrades to cetacea navigation.

Has anyone seen a Menemsha for sale recently? Any particularly good places to look for them besides the standard boattraderonline and boats.com?

Shrimp B,

There has been a Menemsha for sale all summer in the Boston Area.

The ad has been in the "wantadvertiser" for several months. Asking price $9800, I think.

If you want more info, I can dig it up.

Newt - thanks for the response. If you can dig it up without going through too much trouble, that would be great. I'd appreciate it!

16'7" Boston Whaler Menemsha, 1968. Classic cabin model. Collector's item. Incls sleeping bunks, head, fish locker, mohog trim, fold-up table, ship-to-shore radio, Furuno fish finder & an 88hp Evinrude special. This rare model is being offered pre-seas for $9995; Call Tom (Hampton, NH) 603-765-4100.

The above was taken verbatim from the Want-Advertiser, sept 23-29. I first saw the ad in June of this year, and every issue since. Typically ads in this paper are discontinued after 3 weeks unless you request a renewal.

Thanks alot, newt. I just got off the phone with the guy.....he just finished putting 3 coats of bottom paint on in preparation for lobstering. Unless it's in pristine condition, I'm thinking $10k is the reason it has been listed for several months.

Shrimp,

He is obviously not in a hurry to sell either, since the asking price (and the ad wording) has not changed!

Note the "pre-season" price!

The thing with the Want-Advertiser is you dont pay until the item is sold. So, one has nothing to lose by setting a high price!

newt - yea, he said he hadn't been getting many calls on it. It said the ad will be expiring soon, and he won't be renewing. He's thinking of keeping it to go lobstering. Sounds like a workboat to me.

A few years back when I was living in Naples, Fl. I spotted one on U.S. 41 East bound in tow. Of course I was heading west at the time and made an abrupt u-turn and chased the fellow down about 4 miles down the road when he pulled into a local marina. While he was inside doing business I walked around and was amazed at the condition. It was pure mint, down to every little detail. When he came out we struck up a conversation and he told me he was a marine supply salesman on his way to the Key’s for the lobster sports season (July). He had just got the boat back from having it completely redone, inside and out. I told him I had owned one back in the 80’s and asked what it cost to get this beauty back to it’s present condition. He sighed , and said…a cool $20,000. It just goes to show how much a true classic lover will put into his dreamboat. Anyone in SW Florida who hangs out at the marinas might ask around to see where this boat is located.

Wow - $20k to redo a 16 footer that isn't all wood. That's dedication.

there were a couple for sale at Mayfair boatyard in Dennis, MA last summer. I know one sold, but they may still have one. Sorry I don't know the number.

Somebody who once owned one told me that he thought the Menemsha (pronounced Meh-nem-sha) had a softer ride than the traditional center console models because of the added weight in the bow.

Some builders have gone retro, combining their '50s and '60s styling with modern technology.

Hey Whaler, how about a retro Menemsha in the new 170 hull?

Fellas, Fellas,

Please use this thread for comments about the boats whose pictures have already been published. In general, I don't go back and add pictures to pages published several years ago.

Information on how to submit photos is linked at the end of every Cetacea page.

See http://continuouswave.com/whaler/cetacea/guide.html for details.

There is no guarantee that submitted pictures will be published in a timely manner, if at all. The CETACEA feature is produced in a random fashion and not even I understand what prompts me to select and use certain pictures in preference to others.

FOUND A MENEMSHA!

Here is a link to a Menemsha for sale in Iowa. I am sure the price is highly negotiable due to the seller's circumstances. I want it myself, but the timing is no good. Hopefully, someone who loves these things will be able to acquire this one.

I think I'm in love!! I currently have a 19 ft. Glastron but have been looking for a more "utilitarian" (and much lighter) boat to pull behind my Jeep Wrangler. I was familiar with BWs but not the Menemsha model. I LOVE IT!! Now to start looking for one that is on the market and reasonable (what is reasonable for these boats?). A fixer upper would even be acceptable.

I have a 1968 Menemsha. I see that only 235 were produced. Before realizing how classic the windshield is I had it replaced. I will try to get pictures of my ship uploaded so you can see it. The ship that is currently on e.bay is a fantastic buy since the engine alone, if it is four cycle, is more than the current bid on the boat. I put a Mercury 60 four stroke and it is definately underpowered. It planes with four but not with five persons on board.

For anyone interested as of 2/13/2006 the Menemsha listed above is again in an active listing on ebay. Apparently it never sold previously. The current link is: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BOSTON-WHALER-CLASSIC-MENEMSHA_W0QQitemZ4612416252QQcategoryZ31270QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
My dad had one of these boats when I was a kid (he bought it around 1974, when I was 14) and we fished it out of the Merrimack River, one of the roughest inlets in the US, Rockport and the Parker River. It was a fabulous boat. We got caught out in summer storms several times and as far as I could tell my father was never worried and I certainly wasn't. The boat just seemed to be able to handle any swell or breaker. The dual front hatches were excellent in nice weather, docking and ancoring and I recall climbing on and a across the cabin and it always seeming quite solid, much more so than my 1988 Bayliner Capri cuddy!
Well, if anyone reads this and gets the boat I hope you enjoy half as much as I did my dads. And don't be stupid like he was an trade in on a Grady White walk around. Great boat but nothing like the classic Menemsha.
Oh, and his had an evenrude 55 hp motor and seemed to get around great. Got on plane easily with 2-3 people on board and made a nice 20 mph or so.
:) Mark
