I was wondering if the Whaler World was ready for three installments in a row on one model, but when Brian Blazer sent these photographs in I just had to run them.

This boat looks really good, and all that colorful gear provides a nice accent to the grey hull gelcoat. Brian's photographs and scans were excellent, too good not to use immediately, and so we have our third feature on the 21-Outrage.

Do you think all this CETACEA publicity is generating interest in these old boats? Boy, I almost have an itch to go find one myself.

Don't be shy; let's hear the comments on this one.

I think the boat is beautiful, the only grey gelcoat 21 I have ever seen. I particularly like the console design, and I can tell by the windshield screw detail, that it IS a Whaler CPD console.

Note that the yard has not supported the hull properly!

I don't think I will be able to sleep tonight! I'll bet it really hussels with that 175hp... looks like it's right out of Star Treck and it's almost 30 years old!

Since we've been talking props, I can't help but notice that boat has the wrong prop on it, considering the high HP and speed potential. Looks like a conventional aluminium, or at best, an elephant ear teflon coated SS! A boat that will probably do around 45 should not be running aluminium.

Since the boat is relatively heavy equipped as it is, it should be running a Mercury 4 bladed "Offshore" (or equivalent). A recreational Outrage, with same power, should be running a Laser II (or equivalent).

So many times I see beautifully equipped Whalers with cheap, or improperly equipped, props. This is where it all happens, and so many miss this! Props are one of the most "mis-sold" items on boats, either for pricing considerations or just plain lack of knowledge.

I was wondering what the engine was. Wow, 175 HP should make that boat fly.

To be sure the credit goes where it should...
Photos are from Brian Jr. (Outrageman).

I, Brian Sr. (Harpoon Harry when working undercover) only get credit for being his computer illiterate Dad.

One thing about this boat. After logging some hours on my dad's 71 21, I can imagine having the need to be straped to that backboard and then being put on the bow of this boat. It could lead to even more injury.

It should also be noted that I went in to the office of this yard, and asked if it was for sale. I would love to run around the Door County area in this one...

Brian,

What camera did you use for those images?

I used a Sony CyberShot 2.1 megepixel. It was my aunt's camer, but I have te identical model.

I think it is a great camera except for the LCD viewer. In direct sun, or with polarized sunglasses, it is nearly impossible to see.

What a good looking rescue boat. I can not believe how nice the gelcoat looks for an older hull. I agree with LHG, the console is CPD. It has the same cast aluminum doors and frames that are on DIVE 1. I wonder if the entire console is aluminum, I have never seen this specific design.

Jim - I am almost positive the console is glass. There is a picture of a yellow 22' Gaurdian with this console in one of my CPD catalogs, and it also has similar lines to the Outrage glass "Super Console". My guess is that sometime after the boat was first built, it went back to factory in the 80's for a new console. Or maybe it's a very late run of this model boat, such as in 1979, when the super consoles were first being introduced. CPD was not yet a separate department back then, but the boats were being produced to order.

The little "mini-tower/leaning post combo" looks homemade to me. Have never seen anything close to that from CPD, and quite frankly, it's not up to Whaler quality of design or fabrication. It looks like they were copying the famous "Towing Rail Tower and Crash Screen" option, used on so many of the Coast Guard 22's. Most people do not realize that besides holding all of the line posts, antennas, radar, flags, etc, this item, with the screen installed, provided tow line failure protection to the operators.

lhg & Dive1: thanks for the input on the console.

Brian: Your digital camera did a nice job. I really enjoy getting images that I don't have to scan! Of course, every photo needs a little retouching for CETACEA....

Yes , very nice boat. I am doing one right now and following that color scheme. I asked some questions about it in the general area trying to get ideas on what color gelcoat that is...

The last photo shows the "bin" on the tower. I think its for putting your favorite beverage on ice. Accually, I think it may be a storage location for a safety line. I have seen a similar application used on a rescue boat. It had a bin holding a safety line. I don't know if it was to be used for towing or just a throw line.

Ducking...your answer is correct for Jim's question. The bin is for a throwable line. My in-laws live in Northeast, MD and I have seen the exact same thing on boats, in the North East river.

I was just wondering if anyone who lives in this area knows if this boat is still there. I would like to figure out what color of grey was used.
