This message thread is for comments on Cetacea Page 55 which first appeared on April 1, 2002, and featured photographs of Ben Doderall's classic 1977 Boston Whaler Outrage-19.

I am particularly interested in the wooden cover in place in the motor well. Ben describes it as a cover for a live bait well, but I wonder if that is an owner-added adaptation. It is a good idea. I've been planning on making something like that to level out the top of the motor well on my 20-foot Whaler.

Very cool! Looks like perfect inland boat.

What is that aluminum plate atop the fore deck?

Jim that wood (teak) cover is standard. I had the same on my 74 19' revenge. Was kind of a pain due to cables and stuff resting on it made it hard to keep open when retrieving your catch, etc. Mine never looked that good due to gas/oil etc leaking on it when engine was tilted.

Nice touch with the custom wood along the gunnels too. The wood on the console looked perfect. Great job.

I just bought a 1974 Outrage 19 and would like to restore it so that it looked as nice as Ben's boat. Are you still out there, Ben?

I'd like to have teak on the top of my gunnels. Did you add that yourself?

The consensus of comment above is the teak gunwale trim was not standard. It is not shown in the catalogue photographs in either 1974 or 1977 catalogues.

Thanks to all for your comments. I have had a couple of very nice e-mails from board members who have said that this boat was an inspiration for their restorations to their boats. Comments like that make it all worth while.

Just a quick update. All the blue has been updated to black, anti-fouling etc. I added a GPS / Depth which is great especially when I trailer it to the keys, it's kind of shallow down there :0

I just love the boat, never gives me any problems, it just keeps on going and going (knock on wood).

Thanks to all for the compliments.

Ps the Aluminum cover on the bow is for a bow fishing chair installed by the previous owner (pre 1990).
