Gabe,

What a wonderful story...and a great looking boat. nice work all around. Your son won't just be telling "his grandchildren" about the Whaler he helped rebuild, but taking them for a ride in it. ! !

An inspirational story and wonderfully documented, congratulations.
Take a look at what a Whaler looked like under more adverse conditions: www.specialboatunits.com, look for the Whaler link.

Pamlico,
Great job, sure wish we had the side door on DIVE1. The only problem is that we refuse to give up the 310HP hull rating for a 240HP hull with a side door. Enjoy your new toy.

Gabe,
What a great addition to Cetacea. Your story is the backbone of this site. It's what it's all about. Family, friends, boats what more could we ask for.
Thank You,
Jay

Thank you very much Dive 1 & JFM for your pleasent replies. I wish everyone who some day runs across the opportunity to re-furbish a Whaler are any boat they see fit to go ahead with full determination.

Do not tell yourself that you can't and don't you dare let any one else tell you the same.

Put the image of what you want in your mind and attack that image with full force and the image of your boat will come out from the work of your hands.

I wish everyone here calm sea's and clear skies,...and most of all HAPPY WHALING!

Amazing. I've also got little ones. Where did you find the time ? You've inspired me to go at the teak on my old 21 Outrage a little hard this weekend. All the best from the great white north (Toronto, Canada).

Where did I find the time? Well Jinfun, I don't watch much TV and I don't hunt so time was preety much available. I wanted a boat so bad I could taste it. When I had the opportunity to own a Boston Whaler it made it worth while.

You are too modest. You are definitely a master. You did beautiful work.

The door was used to pickup divers and swimmers in a non tactical situation. In a tactical environment an F470 Zodiac is tied to the side of the Whaler and swimmers are pulled from the water onto the Zodiac while both boats are still on plane. The Zodiac of course offeres a lower freeboard and a little softer surface on impact, not to mention it is not under power so there are no props to worry about. Swimmers then crossdeck into the whaler via the door. Awesome boat!

I really loved your story. She is one beautiful boat--alot of work, but alot of pride.

One day I'll own a whaler. Been dreaming of one since I was 12 years old. I'm 43 and I won't stop dreaming of one. I think it's just around the corner--18' Outrage.

Thanks for the kind words Ron1959.

A couple years ago I just wanted a boat. I would have accepted anything,....but then the chance to own a Boston Whaler!

It was kinda like a kid getting ready to turn 16 and he's got to opportunity to own a Corvette Stingray,....all he's got to do is restore it!

That was preety much me,.....

Hope you get your Outrage!

Gabriel

This in an old tread, and I didn't know if I should start a new topic or reply to this one...

What a really neat story, and a great job on the project. I like it that the boat was re-gelcoated and not painted. I love those Guardians.

Here in Kitsap County, across from Seattle, there's a 25 Guardian at the county shed. I tried to buy it earlier this year, but was told that it couldn't be purchased as it still belongs to the government and hasn't been designated as surplus yet.

I remember this particular boat patroling the fuel dock at Manchester, again across Puget Sound from Seattle. It's currently a mess, and would be a real project. It has gray paint (of the battleship variety) brushed on the hull, and some damage to the transom and forward hull sides that would take some time to fix. It's rigged with twin Evinrudes, 150hp I think. I looked at the transom, and it is a 1993 model, but man, what a mess.

I know the guy who runs the county shed, and will know if and when it comes up for auction. I don't need another project, but the chance to own a really big, classic open Whaler might be too much to resist.

So far, this story on Cetacea page 61 is my favorite. Thanks for sharing.

This project (and Jeffs) inspired me to purchase a 22 ft Divemaster.

and then fate...became a wakeup call.

Towboater,

I am very sorry to see what happened to your 22. Man, that's sad. Had you put a bunch of time into it yet, or hadn't gotten started?

I see you're from Kelso. Do you know a guy named Higley, mid forties?

You must be broken hearted. I would be...

towboater posted 06-13-2007 05:10 AM ET (US)     Profile for towboater  Send Email to towboater
EARL Higley?
Hehe.
Yep, there was only only ONE mold made for that guy!
Been a long time since Ive seen him.

On the 22...
Thanks for the condolances but the time and value of that boat was nothing compared to getting my Family out alive.
Actually, only the shop side of the house got hot, in fact, the house alarms never went off. A good Sam woke me up. I was very close to finished with everything except the brite work, touchups and gel projects.

One day I will post a pix of a bright shinny puddle that used to be a Aluminum console.

I dont miss it until project ideas or ol threads like this one remind me.

What was the name of the X-Seal that wrote a fictional book about spec ops. Markolio or something Italian.
He also inspired my project.
Tough guy, he was constantly mentioning the many virtues of Boston Whaler Divemasters til the ridgid inflatables came along.

No, Larry is the guy I was thinking about. He's from down there somewhere, so Earl might be a relative.

You're right, if the family is OK that's by far the most important thing. I know how much work a boat project can be, so I really do feel for ya. Hey, maybe if that 25 Guardian I mentioned ever does become available, you could give it another try. Better you than me for the next few years; I've got a bunch to do to my Montauk this year, and a Sea Ray project that I'm still a long way from finishing. Then there's a few car projects to focus on...

I don't know about the ex-seal guy either, sorry. The rigid inflatables are OK (the Navy's got a few of them around here), but the collars get all big in the sun, and limp when it's cold...I'd take a real boat like a Guardian any day. I've never ridden in a 22' Whaler and have always wondered about the ride. A friend has an 18' Outrage. It's about twice the boat that my Montauk is, at least with regards to ride. Of course, it's a whole lot bigger that the 1' difference in name would suggest.
