Many thanks to Tom Clark, Taylor Clark, and John Anderson for their help in preparing this article. |

Hey it was fun seeing you guys in the pictures !!! Looking good Tom, Russ I got the enclosure up ...Thank you a million times over!!!!! How's the new radar? Dave |
| Keith Silliman |
You all look like you had fun. Great comparison shots. Tom, be careful: you may end up being the official photographer for future rendezous. Great job. |

Another great job Jimh.......Love the idea of so many photos.....also nice to see the pictures behind the names. Nice boat Matthew ;-) |
| jimp |
Great job! I like all the pictures and being able to put faces with names. Thanks for the hard work! JimP |

It was interesting for a southern boy to see folks wearing jackets in some photos and shorts and t-shirts in others: particularly in the summer. It has been some time since I've been in the PNW, but this encourages me to make the effort. Looks like a great time was had by all. Good work. |
| Lake Winni |
It looks like a good time was had by all, nice range of years and models. "Matthew"... Congrats on the new Montauk, from the looks of the photos anyway, you decided to go with the 2S 90 vs. the 4S, Any particular reason? How do you find the motor to be? Was the four-stroke ever a consideration for you? |
| Matthew |
Lake Winni, I find the 2 stroke 90 to be a strong engine. The engine starts quick, idles down nice, has good acceleration and I believe the technology is proven and reliable. I didn't factory order the boat, so the 4 stroke was never a consideration. This boat was in route to the dealership when I decided to make the purchase. Matt |

Fair enough... I'm considering both the 2S & 4S and trying to get various oppinions from owners. Trying to decide between the 170MT & 160 Dauntless and if I go with the 170, this will come into play... My only concerns are smoke and noise, (and I'm wondering if that is really a big issue on these new motors or not so much...) It will be a second boat for us, used to run around our lake and go out to visit friends on the islands. Thanks for your feedback. |

Hey, Tom didn't even bring a camera. He was too busy with the food and logistics. Matt is wearing the offical NW summer boating uniform - shorts and a jacket. You just never know. And check out lae's great aloha shirt. The thing that was tough for me was I had to keep asking for people's screen names, rather than their real names. Its the only way I could keep people sorted out. |

I don't have a page 64 in my menu. |
| Tom W Clark |
Dick, Click the link at the beginning of this thread or go to Cetacea page 63 or some other and substitute 64 for whatever page number it is in the URL. Taylor, I think Keith meant Tom Birdsey who is a really good photographer. He even got a great shot at Manchester of a big fat Bayliner sitting in the mud at low tide at the Manchester dock with its outdrive down. Classic! I too wish we had gotten a group shot. Next year. |

Tom Thanks I got it to come up. Dick |

Tom, What brand of adhesive was used to glue that beer bottle in your hand? :) Jealous Al |
| Eagleman |
Funny thing about Whaler Rendezvous about the only thing that changes is the scenery. Lots of nice people enjoying time together and their Whalers. We are all very lucky! Great photo's. Thank's, Eagleman |

Oh. That Tom. Nevermind. |

I noticed that the new Montauk is lower than the old ones like that Katama. [Edited message--jimh] |

Russ Hubbard. Real pretty 22' Revenge. Question- I notice an aluminum bar running from gunwale to gunwale on your boat. Is this a ski set up or something for fishing in the Northwest? I'm looking for a ski set up that elevates the rope above the outboard yet a set up where I don't carve up the fiber glass in a 22'OR 86. Is it easily detachable or screwed in for keeps? Thanks for your response. David |
| jimh |
BugsyG -- In 64-11 the side by side comparison of the 170 MONTAUK and the KATAMA shows clearly that the new MONTAUK has higher gunwales, particularly in the stern, not lower gunwales. |
| Eagleman |
Rus Hubbard, We are considering adding a radar arch to our 25 W/T Revenge. I was curious about your open array radar type and monitor location inside the boat. If you would like to share some details I'd appreciate hearing them. Good looking boat! Eagleman |

Great feature and photos! There was certainly a nice cross section of classic and contemporary Whalers represented. |

Great pictures of all the Whalers. I used to live in the that area and have spent some nice summer days on Blake Island, in a canoe back then. I hope to bring my 17' Newport up to the Sound someday. Maybe I'll catch the next NW Rendezvous. John S. |

David Ratusnik & Russ Gilson, I can tell you a bit about Russ's Revenge. The bar in the stern is not aluminum. It is made of stainless steel and is extraordinarily stout. Its purpose is to keep people in the boat as the transom notch on the old 22 is quite low, as you know. I do not believe Russ and Fran do much water skiing. The bar is there for keeps. Russ had a local guy (in California) do all the stainless fabrication for the enclosure and stern bar and the quality of the work is outstanding. The enclosure seems to accommodate all the new electronics quite well. The antenna for the RADAR is bolted to a flat plate welded to the top of the frame work. jimh & BugsyG, The gunwales of the new MT 170 and the old 16/17 footers like the Katama are at about the same height. Photo 64-11 creates the illusion that the MT 170 is taller because the boat is moored further away from the camera than the Katama. Photos 64-10 and 64-12 show that the boats are at about the same height. Larry's Katama has much more gear in it than Matt's relatively un-outfited MT 170, though the new Mercury 90 may be heavier than the old Mercury 80. John S., By all means, come to next year's rendezvous and show off your boat. Al, It's merely a prop. For the photos, you know. You better be there next year. I hope to see you at Voula's one of these days. |

What a great record of the event. I loved the pictures of all the Whalers and seeing faces on some of the forum members. I wish I could have participated. Looks like it was a great time. |
| PMUCCIOLO |
Tom W Clark, Please share with us your impressions of the new Montauk 170 as compared to the Classic Montauk 17. How is the fit and finish? The drainage? The ride? The ergonomics? Thanks, |

Sorry I missed your Washington Rendevous. I trailered my 1968 Nauset Whaler from Santa Cruz CA. to Lopez Island on Sept 27,02.What a beautiful area!I got a coastal tour on the water by 89yr old Captain Phil Hastin who was born and raised on this wonderful San Juan Island.Whaler Heaven! |

Are you planning anouther renezous-I have just bought a 69 Menemsha that needs some TLC but for the most part is in great shape- I live in Coos Bay, OR but that might be a fun trip and do you know of any groups like that in Oregon NOFISH |
| jimh |
Information about Trips and Rendezvous is best sought in the FORUM for TRIPS AND RENDEZVOUS. I am sure there will be an announcement of a 2003 Rendezvous as the guys up there are active and friendly Whaler enthusiasts --jimh |
