Nice boat, and another great cetacea page.
Nice job putting to together Jim.

Why did he put the rails so low? Thats the only thing I'd change about the boat.

Ya man, great looking Classic!! Ya the regular bow rail would be nice, but they were an option at that time, and maybe that boat didn`t come with it? Anyway, I love that baby, and that engine should be perfect for her :) Congrats-Jack.

I was curious about the bow railing, too. I could not locate a catalogue reference to them. Maybe they were an option or dealer/owner installed.

That is a very nice restoration. The boat looks great. The friend you bought it from must feel a little sting when he looks at the boat he could have owned.

Great job with the boat. How was the hull "professionally restored" ? Was it painted, new gelcoat, restored gelcoat ?

Best of luck with it. It looks wonderful and I am sure you will have great times in it.

I live in Wilmington, NC, and am looking for a classic Whaler to restore. This article has raised my spirits and convinced me that it can be done. Great job and thanks!

Greetings from Topsail Beach, NC. Very nice job, I especially like the top mounted railings that are lower profile than than the stock version. I have a 13 now but a freind has located a 17 that I may restore. You have given me some motivation thanks.

PS I used to teach at the Medical University of SC and live on Folly Beach, SC.

I've seen your boat on Shem creek, nice job on the wood-no doubt very satisfying! I'll be sure to give you a wave next time I see you, perhaps I'll have to follow you to where you got that nice trout;)

Thanks to everyone for the great responses to my article.
Thank you Jim for taking an intrest in my story and pictures. You done a great job. I feel darn near famous!
About the low bow rails, These rails were on the boat when I found it, and their origin remains a mystery. They look original because there are no reports of filled holes on the boat that Ive found. Having said that, who knows!
I am glad to see my Charleston friends piping in and I'll be around from time to time checking out my hot spots around Deweys and Crab bank!

Professionally Restored
The boat had a blisted bottom and some spider webbing of the worn out gel coating when I found her. The interior fiberglass was in decent shape but had some patching on the deck floor. The boat was flipped and sanded with a "DA" then the blisters and cracks were filled with a polyester filler. The bottom got three coats of 2 part epoxy and the top got 2 coats of single part epoxy. The wood replacement took place anywhere the wood made contact with the deck. The wooden console and seating needed wood replacement and the old 1/2" plywood was replaced with new 3/4" mahogany plywood. My friend Roger worked his tail off making replacement pieces and installing them, and the wood work is the best thing about the boat. Moving from the original 1/2" plywood to 3/4" plywood complicates the job substantially! But his work looks fantastic! Anyone needing to have this work done drop me a line and Ill copy you with his phone number. I refinished all of the wood myself and that takes every evening after work for 2 weeks! As for the motor, I love it in every way and would recommend the 90 horse Yamaha to anyone owning a boat like mine! Youll love it too. As for the guy asking about the norman pins, what the heck is a norman pin?

To those Ive inspired
As for those of you who are feeling inspired to undertake this type of renovation, (Topsail and Wilmington), keep your pocket book handy, and clear your calender for a couple weeks cause it takes a bit of both "time and money". And patience, you'll need some that too. The boat looks great in the photos but its not perfect. I opted to repaint the hull with marine paint from west marine and regret not spending another $2500 on a new gel coat job, but look, you've got to draw the line somewhere or else that things going to eat you alive right? Looking back I wish I'd have taken that step. If I had, my boat would be perfect.

Oh, and dont let people screw you! Everyone and his brother does boat repair. Do your homework on these fiberglass and paint guys. Dont trust one source. I got my guy from my Boston Whaler dealership and I was very dissappointed in the painting! Check em out! Youll be glad you did.

Latest adventures
Me and ol Jeb took her out in Hilton Head over the weekend and caught the biggest meanest sting ray I've ever seen. 25lbs at least. Caught a few Reds and sand sharks and a blue. Plainly put, It was a pathetic days catch, but fun and a whole lot better than workin! Keep the responses coming because I love reading them!
Your pal,
TT.

TT -

I noticed you mounted the steering wheel on the top horizontal surface of the console rather than mounting on the vertical part of it.

It looks pretty cool this way, although it is not how the wheel was originally installed.

Did you do this for a specific reason ?

Is this a better steering position for this boat ?
Just personal preference ?

Again, great work and I really enjoyed the story and pictures.
Interested in your comments.

- Dave

Someone else obviously re-mounted the steering wheel on top of the console because thats the way it was before I refinished it. Yes I like it where it is although my knuckles have grazed that binacle mounted throttle when I take a hard right.

Hello TT. Great looking Whaler!! To me, even the newer whalers don't look quite as good as the baby blue interior with mahagony wood center console.

I've got a 1971 Nauset just like yours (except I have the high rails). We've had it in our family since it was new and now I'm having fun on it with my kids just like when I was growing up.

I am about to embark on a similar mission to replace the motor and trailer. The wood is in fair shape and I plan to re-furbish to new condition later. I've also installed a cooler with pad behind the pilot seat and it works great for storage and seating.

Can you help me understand your thought process for choosing the Yamaha 90 2s? I'm on the fence between this motor and a Suzuki 4s DF70. Also, I like the trailer. Could you please advise the EZloader part number, cost, and dealer?

Thanks in advance for your help.

TT: What a great job.

You give me inspiration...I just bought a 1975 16' that looks very rough. It comes with a newer Yamaha 90 though. Seeing yoiurs, it looks like I have my winter's project and one hell of a challenge to get it to your level.

Very Nice.

Hi TT,

Thats one nice looking boat you've got their.

You said that the whole project cost you $8,500. Do you have any idea what one should expect to pay when restoreing just the hull and wood?

Great looking rig! Those rails are not factory as Whaler never mounted rails on gunnel but all rails were inside mounted on vertical post fittings and supported laterally at near gunnel height. Also side rails were longer with two internal vertical posts. Happy Whalin'... Clark.. Spruce Creek Navy
