Cetacea Page 58 was revised in October of 2003 to add nine new photographs of TABASCO and another 170 MONTAUK, FREE SPIRIT. This new thread was begun so that comments on the revised page could be made without confusion over dates, etc., and in light of the long length (160+ posts) of the old thread. Please use this thread for comments regarding Cetacea Page 58 made after October 7, 2003. |

Once again you have done a first class job. Thanks again Jim |

Wow, lot's of work on the photo presentation, "Tabasco" and "Free Spirit" . I really like the rear cushions and rod holders. These could be additions to the Whaler fishing or comfort packages. Jim |

By the way the plastic fenders can be adjusted if need be. I use mine for guides. Jim |

The additions have made a great article even better. I feel four-foot-itis coming on all over again. What was the source of the cylindrical GPS antenna? tds |

(Added four more new photographs to show KARAVAN trailer, now standard with model year 2004 deliveries, and also the 24-gallon Pate fuel tank.) |

Looking at the photos of the new Karavan fenders, I don't think this is an improvement. The original fenders are taller and act as a guide to keep the boat on track. I would think that unless you installed guide posts that loading the boat on the trailer it would drift over the fenders making it difficult to center the boat. As you look at the photo you see that the hull could ride over the fenders and really require an addition person to load the boat. Also dropping the trailer in the water, I use the top of the fenders sticking out about 6 inches above water level as a position measuring tool. |

[Added hyperlink to the older thread so readers could continue to enjoy those comments.] Ray--I agree with you that from the picture it appears the newer fenders are not as high as the old ones. Perhaps we can get a comment from an owner of the KARAVAN trailer to confirm this. The KARAVAN trailers are also mentioned in this thread: |

Dr T- the GPS antenna was purchased from Garmin as the recommended one to work with the Model 2006C. I believe it actually came with the GPS. I also added (not shown in the photo) a sonar depth sounder pickup, however it look the same as James' "free spirit" shown in his photo of the stern. |

New Addition.......Thanks to James, who sent me a photo showing his new destroyer wheel on "Free Spirit" (used on the 24 & 320 whalers) I ordered one yesterday. Really like the look and James said with the wheel spinner it helps in quick steering changes. It's possible to view the wheel on the whaler site by looking at the new 320 or 24Ft outrage. |

Nit, but I think that the 2006/2010 "GPS antenna" is more than just the antenna. The GPS receiver is contained in the mushroom, and sends the position digitally to the main unit. This is good as there are no cable losses in the antenna coax, and they keep the RF analog and the digital parts well separated.

Where can the Birdsall rod holders be ordered online? |

[Moved comments about another 170 MONTAUK to its own thread.] |

The Birdsall website is currently a mess and you cannot find the rod holders using their site navigation. They are probably being held hostage by their web developer! Poking around I found them apparently on an unlinked page: http://www.birdsallmarine.com/page20.html --jimh |

Anyone who might know, Need to know if the company would still warranty the hull if I replaced the 90 fourstroke with the 115 EFI fourstroke? thanks whalermon |

Regarding thread associated with the KARAVAN trailer and use of the wheel covers to help to with loading: The KARAVAN wheel covers are low and not useful for "guiding"; after seeing the PVC trailer guide add-on pictures in this thread, I plan to install them as the KARAVAN can be difficult to load in wind and in certain deep ramps. This is a great thread for Montauk owners. I have a Raytheon Depth Finder, which I like, mounted on the Dashboard and now need/plan to add a GPS. The dashboard already seems crowded, thus, where would I mount the GPS. Do I need to elmininate the Depth Finder with a combo GPS & Sonar. |

Well I want to take this oportunity to thank JimH on making "Tabasco" the most famous of all Montauk 170's With over 47,000 hits on Cetacea page 58 it has become the second most looked at cetacea page (except for page 1 which had a head start). It has become the time to hand over the torch to the new owner Alex "Aldog" in South Carolina. Im sure it has found a great new home and will be stored in doors as it has been used to since birth. GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE and thanks for all the attention I have received over the years. Ray Beaugrand "TABASCO" |
