Here is a short article that shows the potential for the NMEA-2000 protocol to allow inter-operation between products of different brands, in this case a display device from LOWRANCE and a data source from Evinrude, an E-TEC engine.

The innovative LOWRANCE display has a custom gauge builder application built into it, allowing your to create your own display screens. Very cool!

My dealer gave me whole bunch of BS telling that I can only use Evinrude [gauges] and Evinrude CAN bus parts. Is this true?

The whole concept of the NMEA-2000 digital instrumentation data bus is to allow multiple devices to connect to it, and from multiple vendors. It is possible to use displays made by other vendors such as LOWRANCE with an Evinrude E-TEC motor, however there are some features which are available only with the Evinrude branded displays. These relate to certain engine diagnostic information. The Evinrude gauges are the only ones which display it.

In terms of the wiring accessories used, the connectors have changed several times in the Evinrude scheme, and at the moment they are using the same connectors as Lowrance, who also changed. This article has details:
