After several attempts, manual in hand, I've been unable to set up this Main Page to show speed and COG in between the upper map and lower sonar portions like is shown in the manual.
Anyone using this unit been able to do this? I'd appreciate a tip

I don't see that in the manual. What page? What's the date
of your manual.

Manual is for Garmin GPSMAP 392/398/492/498, dated January 2006 inside the front cover.
Page 26 entitled "Main Pages" shows that you can set up the Map Split Page to show speed and COG along with map and sonar.

If you blow it up in Acrobat, it's Depth, Temperature, and
Speed on that page. No COG. And it's not in between, it's
on top of the Sonar data.

Chuck, that's really interesting.

I have the actual manual and I am looking at it right now. The second image from the left margin along the bottom of the manual page 26 is entitled "Map Split", It shows speed and COG above the map, then the map below, then a squeezed down sonar image in the lower half of the display.

I'll go to Garmin's web page and try to find what you are looking at on PDF

OK, I think here's what's going on here. My actual manual which shows speed and COG on the map split page is dated Jan 2006, Rev A. The PDF file on Garmin's website is dated Jan 2006 Rev B and does not show speed and COG on the Map Split Page.

I would guess they printed up a bunch of Rev A's to go out with this new product and discovered some errors and came out with Rev B in the same month.

So it looks like one cannot set up the unit to show speed and COG on the map split page after all. Oh, well, there really isn't enough space for it anyway.

Now I may need to order the later version of the manual. I'll browse through it online and see if there are other significant discrepancies.

OK, this problem is now resolved, thanks to an email response from Garmin.

It turns out you can set up the map split page on a Garmin 498 to show other data such as speed and COG. If you do, it shrinks down the sonar part of the display greatly but it still shows a numeric value for depth. Its just that the manual doesn't give the instructions in quite enough detail for me, and I suspect, others.

If anyone wants more information you can email me
