In a recent and related thread on the new Garmin 498 GPS Plotter/Sonar unit, Chuck Tribolet and have come across an early Operator's Manual revision. So in case it would be of interest to other purchasers of this unit, here's what I've found:

The unit I bought from the in June came with an included dual frequency transducer. For comparison, the units west Marine sell do not include a transducer. So mine may have been an early version.

My manual is rev A, Jan 2006. The Garmin website PDF version is Rev B, Jan 2006.

In comparing the two versions, the only differences I could find, till you get to the sonar section, are changes of graphics to color , some different graphics, and more complete labelling of some graphics.

The newer manual version does NOT contain a graphic showing that you can set up the unit to show speed and COG when using the split page showing map and sonar. The earlier version A does, and I have been unable to configure mine to do this. Mystery solved.

The sonar section , however, section has been reorganized and expanded and seems a lot more user friendly.

Hope this helps
