Is there a way to test the DSC emergency transmit feature without having an actual emergency? It seems that a way to test this feature should be built into the specification. I would be more comfortable knowing that this feature was tested before I had to depend upon it.

Find another boater who has the DSC radio and you can test the DSC functionality with them. You can pass positionaly and admin data to each other
I made a video on how to do it but because it uses Windows based software JimH prefered I not post the link to the site on this forum. It explains how to do it and what you will actually see. It's still available for viewing. E-mail if you want the link to the site.

It's very simple to do.

Cheers ......

Not all DSC radios can pass position request info to another
boater. They will all pass it with a distress call.

Basically, if the radio correctly displays your GPS position,
and the radio works, and you correctly programmed your MMSI,
all the pieces the distress function needs are there.

My understanding of the DSC emergency system is that it is automated at the monitoring stations. If that is the case then it would be a simple matter to incorporate an emergency test feature that would send a response back to you indicating a successful test AND what data was received. I guess I'm just paranoid about things that may save my life someday.
