On my 1979 Montauk with a newer Honda BF 90 motor and tachometer, there is an old speedometer which registers something close to accurate speed compared to the new GPS.

However, there is no paddlewheel or other in-the-water-sensor.Where is this unit getting its information? Is it using tach data and computing speed not knowing the prop size or what?

Inspect the speedometer instrument to learn more about its principle of operation. Does it have a hose connected to it which leads to the engine? Or does it have wires connected to it? Disregard wires associated with an illumination circuit.

I had a 200 hp merc. that had the speedo pickup on the foot of the motor. If this is the case, look down low on the foot of the motor to see if thats where it is. Hope this helps.
