Here is an interesting account and pictures of a sinking, and a rescue facilitated by an EPIRB signal.

I wonder

A) How long it took the container ship change course and traverse the 90 miles to their position.

and

B) What was on the Whale's mind, other than fiberglass, of course.

C) If the first order of business back on land was to scrape the "Save the Whales" bumper sticker off the family sedan.

I was in Delaware this weekend, and heard the latest accounts of the sinking last week of a 40' wooden sportfisherman boat. It was on all the TV news broadcasts about the boat hitting something 70 miles out of Indian River Inlet. It was big news because the vessel sank in three or four minutes, crew of seven spent 48 hours in a life raft until Coast Guard spotted them, everyone is ok, no mention of an EPIRB. The news this weekend is the large whale that was found dead with a large V shaped gash and somehow this has been matched to the lost vessel. So in conclusion I guess we can say it wasn't about the fiberglass as she was a wooden boat!......Jack

The reply to the thread made me think. Apparently there are reports of aggressive behavior by whales. Recently I had a pair of minkys follow me while trolling for salmon. I witnessed humpbacks breaching ten or more feet out of the water earlier in the season. The more time I spend on the sea the less I fear a collision. Maybe I should rethink that position.

By the way, I meant the reply to the thread on the sailboat forum where the rescue was detailed. Amazing story that makes you realize that a million dollar boat can go down very quick.

The question that continues to baffle me is why there are not more unsinkable large boat designs.
