I have a 2000 Outrage 26 with twin 225-HP OptiMax motors. The boat has gray SmartCraft gauges. They are getting a little hard to read due to sun fade on their lenses. I would like to change them to white-faced SmartCraft gauges. I know there was a big change [in SmartCraft] in 2002, but I have seen the white guages on 2001 boats with 2001 motors. Can the 2001's and 2000's be swapped?

Thanks,
Tom

This is a good question for the SMALL BOAT ELECTRICAL discussion. I will move it there. See the Mercury website and its FAQ on SmartCraft:

http://www.mercurymarine.com/smartcraft_faqs

The first reply says:

"Can I use SmartCraft on my older engine?

"The SmartCraft line of products are applicable to all Mercury/Mariner OptiMax outboard engines starting with Model 2000, and all MerCruiser 8.1 liter engines for Model Year 2001. The SmartCraft line of products will not retrofit to any previous Mercury/Mariner or MerCruiser engines."

Tom,

Earlier this year, I installed a Smart gauge and cable on 130 Sport with a 40 hp 4 stroke and have Smart gauges on a 2001 23 Outrage with a 225 Optimax. While researching what gauge to install on the 130 Sport and comparing it to the existing Smart gauges on the 23, the only question regarding model year of the engine was to determine if it was Smart gauge ready. There appeared to be no specific gauge to year of motor requirement. This leads me to believe that provide the engine is Smart gauge ready you can install a new gauge for an old gauge, without any problems. You should call Mercury to confirm, the customer support at Mercury is very good.
