Cingular is dropping their TDMA service in favor of GSM, so
I've got to get a new cell phone. Anybody seen a GSM cell
phone waterproof to JIS-7 spec?

Not Cingular. Unclear if it is JIS-7. However, it does seem worth a look.

Verizon is generally not a GSM network.

The new Casio is IPX7

After one year since the release of the G'zOne phone, Casio has announced the next model from the series.

Casio G'zOne W42CA is a waterproof phone supporting the CDMA standard for high speed communications.

The handset measures 53 x 117 x 29 mm, weighs 155 grams and has passed the IPX7 test, meaning that it can withstand accidental immersion in one meter of water for up to 30 minutes.

On the outside of the handset there is a camera that can capture pictures at a 2.0 megapixel resolution.

The phone features two displays: a primary screen measuring 2.4 inch, capable of displaying 65k colors and a secondary screen which is monochrome but is bigger than the standard external displays.

Other features of the G'zOne W42CA include 50 MB of internal memory, expandable by using microSD cards, and a built in music player.

The battery placed at the back of the phone is hidden under a protective cover which also protects the expansion card slot. The phone supports 240 hours of standby time and 190 minutes of talk time.

The handset will be available in June 2006.
