Nice thing about the winter in the North East is that there’s some time to shop around for boating needs unlike during the frantic summertime. That’s the only upside I can see to single digit outside temperatures.
I now have a need to be able to shuttle my Garmin 178C GPS/Sonar between two different boats. My 178C uses the external GPS antenna, not the built in version. It also uses a transom mounted sonar transducer for water depth and bottom contour information. It mounts to the dash with a swivel bracket and also needs a power & data cable to interface with the GPS antenna, sonar transducer and 12 volt DC power.
I went to the official Garmin website for the OEM part numbers and the factory accessory pricing. I was pretty much ready to order from the Garmin online store, when I decided to price shop with Google and Pricegrabber. Now I’m glad I did, I can save $77 on a $181 dollar purchase. So, with an investment of half an hour in time, my total layout went from $181 to $103 (both require shipping charges) for the same exact items from the same manufacturer.
Guess it pays to shop around for marine electronics…

zzzzzzzz.net gets a pretty low rating (2.98 or 5.98 out of 10) from resellerratings.com.
vvvvvvvvv.com rates a 9.7/10.

Hmmmmm.... I've ordered computer parts from zzzzzzz, and was satisfied with their service. That was 2+ years ago, but I looked at the reviews on reseller ratings and am not 100% confident that I'll use thenerds now. If I do use thenerds, I'll use a credit card with a good protest policy.

I've bought several pieces of electronics gear from wwwwwwwwwwwww, which came in at $42.99 on the Garmin antenna mentioned above. They get 7.69/10 on resellerratings.com.
Given that the list price on the antenna is $59.99, it's boggling that another retailer is asking $74.00.

CONTINUOUSWAVE does not really make any attempt to collect data on vendor customer satisfaction or price points. Anecdotal reports about a few vendors are not particularly convincing of their low price or reputation. As already seen, there are other websites which focus on collecting information about customer satisfaction for on-line retailers. And, for collecting low-price information, it is hard to beat FROOGLE.COM.
