I recently purchased a Boston Whaler Newport 17, and I am intalling electronics on it. I purchased a [Standard-Horizon] CP-180 [Chart-Plotter and GPS]. I want to install the [external SONAR module] FF520, but I do not know which [transducer to use]. I am hesistant to put one in thru the hull. Will a [SONAR transducer] attached to the [transom] work as well?

I don't think a Newport has a place to mount a through hull
transducer. Only a few of the bigger whalers do.

Transom-mount SONAR transducers generally do not work as well as transducer's installed on the hull bottom. I believe that has more to do with the generally larger size of the transducers designed for mounting on the hull bottom, although the location is probably more advantageous.

In general, all small boats and particularly small Boston Whaler boats use transom mounted transducers. If you are interested in more information about transducer location choices with Boston Whaler boats there is a good article in the REFERENCE section on this topic.
