I ordered a new Garmin 440s to replace the old Garmin 168 on my Outrage 22. I received the UPS shipping notice today so should be able to install by the end of next week. I will post a review once I get to test the new unit out.

I am sorry but there are so many models and manufacturers that I have no idea what a Garmin 440s might be. Could you elaborate? I assume it is some sort of marine electronic device. Thanks.

Checked the Garmin site and it looks like a nice unit. The XM weather would be great in areas where thunderstorms pop up quickly.

Padrefigure, I'm looking to order a Garmin 535s (http://www.garmin.com/products/gpsmap535/). Where did you order your 440s unit? Did you feel you got a good price? Thanks.

Are you sure that the 440 is in transit? The manual is not on the website yet and that happens about a week before shipping,

The Garmin 440s is one of Garmin's newest charplotter/sounder combination. Claimed features include full color display, improved base maps, XM weather capability (on the X series units--I did not choose this option) and expandability through an add-on chip that provides enhanced map and port details. The 440 series provides a 4" screen--other units provide larger screens and superior resolution. I am upgrading from a Garmin 168 chartplotter/sounder combination.

I only know that I received a UPS shipment notification on Friday. I will keep you posted when the unit arrives.

Can I ask who you ordered from? I am getting a 535s myself.

I purchased from RB Marine, but I simply did an internet search and found the lowest price. I controlled risk by paying with a credit card and in the end, it will be Garmin that makes the unit "right" if it fails to operate correctly. It seems that internet prices fluctuate daily, so the best price may be from a different vendor from time to time.

I got 420 from Anchor Express- least expensive price on internet and free shipping. Ordered by phone, reportedly to arrive from Garmin in 13 days then they ship to me.

How do these compare to the 498 model?

The 440s is the same price (as Anchor Express) at BOE. Still two week wait either place.
;)

4/6 update: The GPS arrived yesterday as promised, but with one small problem--RB shipped the 420S instead of the 440S (no base map). Spoke with them on the phone this morning and they issued an RA. So no sonar installation this weekend.

Newtauk1--the 498 has a 5" (diagonally measured) and the new 4xx series units have a 4" screen. The keypad is different, as well.

Padrefigure,

Did you order the additional GARMIN BlueChart g2 Vision Chart?

I see they are $260.00

Thanks

padrefigure posted 04-11-2007 09:04 AM ET (US)     Profile for padrefigure  Send Email to padrefigure
I have not ordered the G2 chip, yet. My plan is to get the unit installed and review performance and, if satisfied, order the chip(s).
Newtauk1 posted 04-11-2007 09:59 AM ET (US)     Profile for Newtauk1
That sounds like a good approach. Did you consider the Discounted 498? I believe the main two differences between the 498 and 440 series is that the 440 accepts the upgraded chip and the 498 does not. The 440 screen is one inch smaller (Diagonally) then the 498.
padrefigure posted 04-14-2007 11:07 PM ET (US)     Profile for padrefigure  Send Email to padrefigure
I did consider the 498, but chose new technology because the price differential was low. I paid $499 for the 440s and that was about the bottom price for the 498.
Newtauk1 posted 04-17-2007 02:04 AM ET (US)     Profile for Newtauk1
I do not see the 440s for $499.00. I see the 420 at that price. 440s $589.00

Who has the 440s for $499.00?

padrefigure posted 04-17-2007 03:26 PM ET (US)     Profile for padrefigure  Send Email to padrefigure
You are correct--the price now comes up $589. I paid $499 plus $15.67 for UPS delivery. I do not see anything close to that on the web now. Sorry.

I bought my 440s from BOE $567 with transducer, free freight. If you play the 'docking' game you get another $5 off.
;)

Bought the 440s (Garmin GPSMAP 440s Compact Color GPS/Sonar Combo with Saltwater Transducer)

from www.tigergps.com .

$586.15 delivered (freight free)

Mardav,

What is the docking game?

Mardav posted 04-23-2007 07:38 PM ET (US)     Profile for Mardav  Send Email to Mardav
Go to the Boe site: http://www.byownerelectronics.com/store/home.php
and the 'docking simulator' is at the top. Click on it to play the game and when you complete it, they email you a coupon good for $5.00 off a purchase over $100. It's fun too!

I did see that game once. Was awful at it. Come to think of it I docked as well in the cyber world as I do in real world...or pretty darn close. Oh Boy.

440s Just arrived. Should I connect direct to the busbar with an inline fuse?

My ol GPS was ripped off last month.

Just purchased a Garmin GPSMAP 545s simply because Marty (Rogers Marine Electronics, Portland Or) said this is the one I need. I think his head is Maritime Interphased & his shoes have sonar transducers build in. The guy is a Marine Electronic Info forum in his own right.

Ive been buying electronics from Rogers for over 20 years.
The entire Columbia River Commercial fleet has a account there. At the Portland Boat Show, I just waved, he nodded hello as I went buy while 4 people were picking his brain.

Regarding the 545s, he didnt mention maybe this one here will do, or, that brand is almost as good and all that, he just said this Garmin is the one you want...period.
He knows I need rough service stuff.
It has the split screen options, blue tooth, hi res, 5 inch diagonal and all the high tech gizmos. I have no clue what it all means, but, I will learn.
I rambled off visa numbers & cant wait to pick it up as soon as I get time.

$1620.
Incl thru hull transducer & ant for the Tug, transom mount transducer for the Guardian is not a bargain. But, if I have any questions or problems, I know who to call.

Scubasteve's has the 440 for $485.
http://www.scubasteve.biz/store/manufacturers/garmin/garmingpsfm.htm

I am thinking about ordering a 540 from him.

Newtauk1 posted 04-25-2007 04:49 PM ET (US)     Profile for Newtauk1
The 440S comes with the transducer. I am not sure of the cost to buy the transducer seperately. The 440 does not have a transducer included.

I believe that might be the difference in price between the 440 and the 440S.

The 545s is sitting here beside me.
Basically, it is just a larger version of the 440s.

Rogers Marine had a demo set up & I played with it for 20 mins. Oh man, unbelievable graphics, it is 10 times more user friendly than my old one.

Dads SeaSport has a split screen Raytheon (2003) and this new Garmin, at least the DEMO is 5 times easier to see, read, use. Rogers had big older units on sale for double the price of my 545s that I wouldnt trade for.

With the price of gas going nuts, Marty recommended FloScan fuel monitor. $299.
It is sitting here too. $$$ never ends.
If the monitor and my patience saves 5 gal per hour;
= $15/$300 = 20 hrs to pay for itself?
Man, that doesnt seem right. If it is, $300 for the unit is a bargain based on 100 hr season.
(Volvo 350 FI DP) = $1500 savings over running with reckless abandon for 120 hrs.
