I am cleaning up some of the wiring under my console. My question relates to the separate, fused circuit that my Garmin 178C GPS is on.

I remove the GPS unit from the boat after each use. Each time I plug it in, I wonder if it makes sense to have that circuit on a switch so I can switch the circuit itself off before fiddling with the Garmin plug connection.

I have a Garmin 178c installed in my console powered through a switch. Everytime I shut the switch off and back on, I need to restart the Garmin with it's own power button.
Therefore I would not worry about any surge from connecting/disconnecting.

It's handy to have all the electonics switched, but a single
switch is enough. They don't need individual switches.

I very much doubt it matters whether you are taking the connector on/off under power or not. The wires in the connector are two power wires and possibly several data wires. You couldn't possibly damage the unit if these connections make or break randomly as the connector is installed or removed.
