I just purchased a Garmin 498. After following all of the installation instructions I am not able to display the pre-installed maps. The unit is able to find our lat/long, but the maps are not displayed. Anyone have any suggestions?

Can you do a reset?

What does the map display show you? Are you seeing only a light brown screen?

Check to see if you are zoomed in too tight to see any detail. You also might check your map detail/option settings and see where they are at. I keep mine set to high.

I was reading the manual on my friend's 498, and it said that if you try to install a MapSource card or chip in the unit you will delete all the original pre installed data. Are you sure that someone hasn't done that?

The 492/498 series accepts other G2 Chart or data cartridges without damage to the pre-installed G2 Chart Base Maps. Use them all the time with customer installs to show them how the unit works. From the units manual.

I hear what you say but the Garmin BlueChart g2 Marine Cartography User's Guide states at page three as follows:

That means don't save any data to the preprogrammed G2 chart card that you inserted into the 498 such as your waypoints, tracks, and routes because that data will be written over the data on the preprgramed G2 card you.
Has nothing to do with the internal preprogramed G2 charts that come installed on the 498.
