I have no personal experience with them, but I spend too much time on the fish report forums. The charter captains and other hard-core types use them and swear by them. Apparently, there can be quite a difference in ball speed relative to boat speed, a concept I have difficutly contemplating. I don't dispute there is a difference, I just don't understand how there could be. However, I can certainly appreciate being able to know the temperature at a given depth, as this is probably the single most important variable in controlled depth fishing, particularly for salmon. Currently, I rely on loose lipped captains who report temperatures found at depth over the radio for those of us still using "dumb" balls.

Although a Michigan site, there is a lot of general Great Lakes info available there.
