The [bonding system of c.1980 Boston Whaler OUTRAGE 18 boats] was pointed out to me by an experienced CW member. I have not seen [bonding systemss] on other similar sized boats. I would appreciate if someone could explain the intent and importance of [the bonding system used on classic Boston Whaler boats]. Thank you.

All depends on what your looking to accomplish. Try this article -

The bonding system on classic Boston Whaler boats like the OUTRAGE 18 connects all metal components of the fuel system with 8-AWG copper wire as well as connecting a sintered bronze anode on the transom. The purpose of this bonding system is to prevent accumulation of static voltages on any component of the fuel system.

Thank you for the replies, Gentlemen. More questions: is this more of a fresh water vs. salt water concern? Do many other small boats operate without this feature?

Thanks agian.

Is your concern lightning protection?

not particularly-just wondering if it is overkill (not that overkill is a bad thing).

I wouldn't concern myself adding to the existing bonding system unless your looking to accomplish something. As Jimh pointed out, The existing bonding system is adequate for it's intended purpose.

I would just go over the green wire and connectors to make sure there aren't any loose ends.

Thanks Bella. I was actually wondering how much of a priority it should be to replace the bonding system in the case of assuming ownership of an Outrage that has (unfortunately) had the system removed by a previous owner.

Again, I would spend the hour or so labor and reestablish the existing bonding if for no other reason then to have "ground" continuity when fueling up.
