I have heard tons of positive [comments] about Humminbird products and support while on my hunt for best setup for my boat. Apparently things have improved dramatically since they have been acquired by Johnson Products. Iis that correct?

I had an extremely knowledgeable manager at Bass Pro demo a few tonight and was really impressed with Humminbird 787 combo unit.

Anyone have reviews, reports, and opinions?

I bought a cheap ($80.00 ) or so Humminbird fish finder a few years back and couldn't be happier. It's grayscale and shows depth to 600' which is not much of a problem on Tampa Bay:-)

It also has water temp, fish depth location and size graphics.

I didn't want a combo unit because I can take my handheld Magellan along when fishing with a friend who doesn't have a GPS.

I have had several Humminbird products and haven't had any problemss with any of them.

One minor criticism is that the transducer bracket mounting holes are all different, i.e., they don't line up. Since their mounting bracket for the control units are the same it seems they would standardize their transducer brackets to make upgrading simpler. In other words it would be great if the transducer from a newer model could be installed using the holes from the older model's transducer.

Right now I am using the 363 GPS/Fishfinder combo which was economical works well and has a built in base map which doesn't have a lot of detail but is good enough.

I just got a 997si for may 19 outrage II. All I have to say is WOW. It is an outstanding unit and the side imaging capabilities will just blow you away.

I've had a couple of Humminbirds SONARs, first a very inexpensive one,
later a fancy multibeam unit. The transducer and unit
mouting holes were identical.

I really like their quick release swivel.
