I am looking for a compatible GPS plotter / sonar that, when connected to the new Standard Horizon GX 1500S radio (which has NMEA in and out), would be able to show a position report on the GPS screen. As I understand this, the GPS would have to support the DSC and DSE sentences. I would appreciate any and all guidance on this!

I should add that I currently own the Garmin 178 Plotter / sonar unit. I am a bit confused reading the owners manual. It does not indicate that the 178 supports both DSC and DSE but in the DSC section of the manual, it clearly shows the option of viewing a DSC position report on the GPS screen. I THOUGHT I could achieve this by buying a new radio that has NMEA in and out (like the GX 1500S does)It may be that my older Garmin does not support the neccessary sentences and I will have to start over with something like the SH CP 180i...

On Garmin's website, they have a firmware upgrade for the Garmin 178C which inccludes the following statement: "Changes made from version 2.40 to 2.50 include adding support for receiving NMEA DSE sentence". Before you buy something new, upgrade your firmware to the latest garmin offers for free. Garmin has firmware updates available free for download on their website. Version 2.80 Released May 10, 2007 is available on Garmin's website.
Garmin's firmware is cumulative. If you miss an update, the latest one always has the fixes from the previous versions built into it. You do NOT need to step through each individual version along the way, but it is nice of Garmin to list the various things that changed along the path to the latest firmware.

Thanks for the reference to Garmin's updates info. I am wondering exactly how I might effect this software update. The 178 I own has a data card slot and a power/transducer cable including tinned bare wires for NMEA interfacing. How would I load the software onto the GPS itself?

Thanks, where2. I understand now what to do. I need a blank data card and a data card loader connected via a USB plug to my computer to load the update onto my 178. This forum has repeatedly saved me time, frustration and money. Thank You.
