My current Garmin 240 [malfunctioned] the last time I used it. I have a feeling it's the transducer. The display looks great but it doesn't show depth. It doesn't even have a flashing number at the top where one should be. When I run it in the test mode, it shows bottom. I did notice some corrosion in one of the ports in the transducer plug. I tried to clean it out but it didn't make any difference. I'm thinking about picking up either the Garmin 140 or 160C, installing the transducer to see if that's the real problem. Will these transducers work with my current unit? Is color much of an improvement? I usually fish inshore, depths to about 60 feet.

I attempted to find a friend who has a Garmin to test the unit out, but haven't been able to locate one. Short of sending it to a fellow forum member, I think I might be better just to make an update. I don't want to spend a bunch of money, just something that'll do the job if the transducers aren't compatible.

Thanks for the help.

Dave -

Have you given Garmin Support a call?

I had an issue with my sounder and even though it was discontinued, the were a real help in troubleshooting.

Give them a try.
