Author Topic:   Garmin 540s Lacks Trip Records Feature

Having just installed the new Garmin 540s GPS Plotter and Sounder in my boat, I began to look through its features and realized that there does not seem to be a trip recorder. Is it the case that, unlike the older 172, 178, 498, (etc.) models, the new ones do not provide for distance travelled, average speed, max speed? I did find the odometer.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Bob

What is the difference between the distance travelled parameter and the odometer?

I guess I was not too clear. The term decribing the function I can't seem to find on the 540 is a trip computer. This feature has a resetable odometer, max speed, average speed, etc.

Can't believe they did not include a trip log. I guess that after including all of the other bells and whistles, they did not have any room left for one.

I think in a marine application the proper terminology for the device that tracks the distance travelled is "log" rather than odometer. And there are often two logs being kept, one a master or overall log, and a second "trip log" which is easily reset to zero in order to track incremental distances.

Maybe this is a question for Tom of Bluewaterpirate fame since he seems to know the function of the new Garmin units intimately? on the 540s, it is indeed called "odometer" The trip computer is so handy - i just can't fathom why it was not included in the 500 series

The "missing?" page. This was what our GPSMAP 178C had:

Sorry to say the new 500 series does not have a Trip Log Page like this (picture of my 2206)

You can program some of the data you want into the Numbers display on your 540.

Send a TR to Garmin and if enough folks do the same you might just find a Trip Log Page in a future firmware update.

Tom
