Can anyone share experiences with XM weather subscriptions using the Garmin 500 series [combination GPS, chartplotter and SONAR]? Can the [chartplotter's display] be used [to show weather radar received from the XM service]? The Garmin manuals suggest this but I would like to hear from users.

XM Satellite Weather offers many products. See
For a nice presentation of information in a matrix showing what services are supported and what hardware combinations are needed, see:

Just click on the links below to watch videos of all the features/functionality of the Garmin 500 series. If you have questions after you watch them I'd be more than happy to answer them. These videos were taken using a Garmin 545 that is installed on my Whaler. I have the Master Mariner XM Weather/Music subscription.
After opening the links click on the writing next to each of the pictures. There is probably a good hour of videos accompanied with narratives.

Thanks so much for the information. I am looking at the subscription pricing and have a question: at the "Skywatch" level (entry level) woul dit be worth it to only have Radar Summary, Radar Coverage, City Farcasts, Weather Warnings and Suface Observations. These are the only features available at the "Skywatch" subscription price.

SKywatch as I understand use a different platform for delivery other than the Garmin 500/4000/5000 series cps.
What package you choose would be driven by the type fishing you do (i.e. freshwater, near shore, offshore). Here's a link to the Skywatch functionality.
Purchase our Licensed Version- which adds many more features!
