I just recently purchased a 540 and all works fine except the XM Satellite radio. I get sound out of the new speakers I installed but cannot get much volume out. I can adjust the volume to 100% put not much output to the speakers and I cannot select any treble or bass. Do I need an amplifer out to the speakers? Thanks

The problem you describe is consistent with a line level
output, which needs an amp.

I presume you have the GXM 31 receiver, since that's what will
work with the 540 to do XM Audio. Garmin doesn't make it easy
to help you: the GXM 31 manual isn't anyplace I can find it on
their website. And the 540 manual doesn't discuss audio much.
I presume you have a paper copy of the GXM 31 manual. Does
it describe the audio outputs as "line out"? That would
need to go into an amplifier. Or if they have RCA plugs
(a center pin about 1/8" diameter and 1/2" long, an outer
shield about 1/4" in diameter and 1/4" long), then it's
likely (99%) to need a amp (RCA plugs usually indicate a
line level, but are used for speakers on very rare occasions).

Cheeeesus! I just made a special trip to Boaters World to check out the 545s, I am getting close to pulling the trigger. What other surprises are to follow? zot.

There are no surprises in this installation The GXM 31 antenna comes with an operators manual & comes with a cable that connects on the back of your 540/545. Two cables have RCA connectors that plug into the aux channels of you installed radio and the other cable provides the connection for the GXM 31 antenna itself. .... the 540/ does not have enough to power standlone speakers.

Here are some pictures ....
