I have installed a new alternator driven Teleflex tachometer on my Perkins diesel. I have power on the [ignition] circuit and when the engine is stopped I have battery voltage on the send wire. When I start the engine the voltage on the send wire drops to around 7.6 volts. What should this reading be?

Teleflex has excellent technical documentation on-line for most of their products.

Is it possible that the Perkins diesel and its alternator were designed to start with and charge a 6 volt battery? A reading of 7.6 volts would be about correct for charging a six volt battery. Dave
