I have installed a new alternator driven Teleflex tachometer on my Perkins diesel. I have power on the [ignition] circuit and when the engine is stopped I have battery voltage on the send wire. When I start the engine the voltage on the send wire drops to around 7.6 volts. What should this reading be?

Is it possible that the Perkins diesel and its alternator were designed to start with and charge a 6 volt battery? A reading of 7.6 volts would be about correct for charging a six volt battery. Dave
