Hi all. I will be receiving my Garmin 498 any day now. I am interested in possibly purchasing additional Bathymetric and G2 charts. Do the charts really enchance the usefullness of the 498?

I would like to be able view a few high spots on the local outer banks in our area. Actually I really need is the coordinates. Is having the chart really useful for this application?

Also wanted to find out what additional features I would be getting with a G2 chart over the already installed version that comes from the Garmin.

Thanks--Andrew

Here are two screen shots of the same area.

1. With standard G2 preloaded charts (no bathymetric data)

2. With G2 Bathymetric Charts upgrade

Thanks for those screen shots. They really demonstrate the difference.

ASIDE: How do you take the screen shots on your Garmin? Do you have to use a flash memory card to transfer them from the device to your computer?

I use a program called Snag-It. Take the screen shot ... I can chose thare I want to capture, then if I want to annotate them I can do that from Snag-It. Once I complete the process I save it to a a folder then upload back to Phanfare my hosting partner.

Here's their website.

Tom--How do you capture the image on the GARMIN? (Not the image on your PC.)

Jim ...

I use Garmin Map Source (MS) software that lets me display and manipulate the data from BlueCharts. My MS has the same charts and nav data as my Garmin chartplotters (that's how I archive all my trips to my computer). I can download all my data from either of my Garmin chartplotters into MS or I can add waypoints, build routes, display tracks/track data in MS. I can then upload that data back to my chartplttera via SD or Garmin memory chips.

I capture all the map pictures via MS from my computer monitor (via Snag-It) then upload them into my hosting partner. These pictures were not shot from my Garmin chartplotters but are screen captures from MS.
