Hello folks. I'm the proud owner of a new (07) 170 Montauk and also landlocked in Colorado. I sepent all day Sunday during a blizzard on Continous Wave researching all the mods everyone has done. Kudos to all for providing incredible useable content.

I hope someone can help with this one. Looking to purchase a GPS/Sonar combo and have targeted the Garmin 540S. Garmin makes these available as "refurbished" units through various dealers. They claim as good as new and provide their standard 1 year warranty. Has anyone used, purchased or have any knowledge of these refurbs in terms of quality and reliability?

I just purchased a 498 sounder that was refurbished by Garmin. I was pleasently surprised upon arrival of the unit. The warrenty is the same as a new unit, came with all the current software updates and drivers, and looked brand new.

I was orginally going to get the 540s but upon looking at the 498 decided that this unit was more than adaquate for my needs.

If interested I purchased from BOE marine. Was very happy with there customer service.

Good Luck!

What are the differences between the 540s and the 498c? This only things I notice are sat weather and later charts. Am I missing anything?

I believe that in many cases the products which are sold as "factory refurbished" are products which were returned by retail customers for one reason or another. They can't be resold as new, so they get categorized as refurbished. The refurbishment might have been as simple as repacking the box and cleaning the fingerprints off the display.

The 498C has been discontinued by Garmin. The user interface is slightly different. Garmin still has the specs on their website if you want to make a detailed comparison.

Thanks, I am aware the 498c has been discontinued. I have been to the Garmin site to compare the two FF/GPS prior to asking the question. Garmin has changed what they are listing under the spec for the two ff/gps. It almost looks like Garmin changed to a single format for cars and boats?

The reality of consumer electronics these days is that things are no longer really "repaired". It is too hard to pay and train people to fix very complex stuff that changes very frequently. The best you might get is replacement of some major subassembly, like the display, or the entire internal circuit board, and so on.

Thus there are really only two kinds of units around: ones that work, and ones that don't. Anything "repaired" is essentially new. This explains why the Garmin (and most others) out-of-warranty repair policy is a very steep flat-rate price - unless it's very obvious, the "repair" consists of throwing yours out and giving you a new one (or one that is known to work).

The third kind is the kind that people return with absoutely nothing wrong with them; the people just have no clue how to use them. They are checked out and resold as refurbished.

Thanks for the feedback. Just received a re-manufactured garmin 540S from BOE. 1 Year Warranty and saved approx $ 300. Looks as though it was never used or installed.
