For the past few years, I have carried an EPIRB when boating, and even on extended motorcycle trips. The big problem wiht them is that they are very expensive. Also their use is limited to calling for serious help.
For my birthday, my wife bought me a Spot Satellite Messenger System.
While not the horsepower of an EPRIB, this unit will not only call for emergency help, but non-emergency help (from a list of contacts you provide), sen "I'm OK messages with your coordinates superimposed on Google Maps (again to a list you give), and do automated 10 minute tracking of your progress.
On top of it, not only is is waterproof, it floats!
I don't sell these, etc.

I saw this in West Marine last weekend. $149 plus an annual subscription ($100, I believe).
Sounds like a great idea.

$100/yr is the basic service (both emergency and non-emergency help, and OK messages). It's an extra $149 if you want the tracking service.
They also offer $8 annual insurance that covers the cost of a major SAR job (I think there is a $40k cap).
