I'm in the market for a handheld vhf, don't need GPS combo. Any up to date recommendations out there? Thanks!

West marine has several moderately priced units, so does Wal-Mart and Best-Buy. I bought a West Marine VHF unit, Model VHF-150. It came with a battery charger, battery pack and belt clip. Under $200.00.

Make sure it's waterproofness is rated JIS-7 or IPX-7 (3 feet
down, 30 minutes).

Find out whether the charger is a smart charger that will stop
charging when it's done. With today's technology, there's no
excuse for not doing that, but I'll bet there's the bottom
unit in some lines doesn't.

If this is a backup to a console-mount VHF, make sure it has
a removable antenna and you get an adapter so you can use it
with your real antenna.

Do you want to listen to the ball game? Some have AM/FM
receive capability.

Some have FRS/GMRS capability. Note: These will NOT have a
removable antenna (FCC regs).

Personnaly, I'm a fan of the Standard-Horizon units.
