I have a small rewire and new wire project on a 1980 Revenge but cannot locate for purchase the base color wire with appropriate stripe/tracer colors as used in original BW marine wire color code (http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/wireColorCode.html). Is that color code no longer used (base with stripe)? If it is not, then I assume I run the appropriate base color only.

If it is used, would someone kindly point me to a vendor? Thank you.

Dave

What color base and stripe are you looking for? I can get you whatever you need. Wire is from Pacer Marine, about as top quality as Ancor.

It is quite difficult to obtain small quantities of marine grade wire with insulation that has color coding involving color stripes, for example, red with a violet stripe or white with a tan stripe. Generally you do not find such wire available at the usual retail sources.

If you can't get the exact wire you need, I suggest you use a wire with the matching base color, and at the termination of the wire you add a wrap of tape to the wire to indicate the stripe color. For example, if you need a wire with insulation color coded as white with tan stripe, use a wire with white insulation for the wire. Obtain some vinyl electrical tape in a light brown color. Cut the tape into a smaller width, say 0.125 inch. Wrap a few inches of the tape onto the base wire at each end of the run. Sometimes these tape wraps become loose, so it is also a good idea to apply some clear heat shrink tubing over them to retain them.

You could also just apply a legend to the wire using a write-on marker tab. These are sold at electrical supply houses.
