After hooking up all the [NMEA] devices I have going--AIS receiver, radio, fuel flow, and GPSr--I bought the [PAS-Thru Box™]. It makes a nice place to get all the connections organized and makes it easy to see what is going on. It helps to see all. All of us should list our various equipment and the connection scheme we used. It could be a reference for the whole marine community.

West Marine has the [PAS-Thru Box] on sale. Link

I can see why West Marine needed to put the PAS-Thru Box on sale. At $330 retail they probably were not selling many to small boat owners.

It is a good solution, but I think it is over-priced. I don't like having all the cables running though one grommet, either. It also looks like the installer has to cut or bridge solder traces on the printed circuit board. That is probably beyond the skill of most fishermen-boaters.

If you would like to present a well-organized summary of all the device interconnections you have made in your vessel NMEA interconnection, it would make a good article. I have found that in order to understand electrical interconnections it is mandatory to have a very well drawn and well thought out schematic diagram. Technical illustration is an art, and it requires a great deal of skill to produce electrical diagrams in which the layout helps to convey the information. For interconnections, sometimes data in tabular presentation is better.

I would also like to hear about your AIS receiver installation and connection to a chart plotter. Perhaps you could give us an article on that topic.

Have a good trip to Maine. Watch out for rocks and falling tide. And let us know how the AIS works in a future posting.
