Here is some video of what AIS tracks and information look like on a Garmin 545. I've have a jerry rigged intall on my Ventura but haven't had any realtime underway period to evaluate it. I'll keep you posted.

Does the GARMIN 545 display calculate the closest point of approach (CPA) for AIS targets?

Jim ....

Yes it does, if you'll look on the contact information page you'll see the data lines listed for CPA and time of CPA (TCPA).

I'm using a Raymarine AIS250 connected via NMEA 0183 to the 545. The AIS 250 is connected to one of my ICOM 504's via a cable supplied by Raymarine.

Thanks Tom.

Sounds like I need to update my 545s. Will I become better served to buy a chip that includes AIS capabilities or buy the cable that will connect the unit online to download updates or, both?

MK ....

You can update your Garmin 545 software two ways.

1. If the computer your using has an SD Card slot/SD card reader then all you need to do is purchase a 2 gig SD card, format it by placing it in the SD card slot on your 545 prior to turning the unit on. Once the SD card is formatted you can then download the latest software version (v4.3) from the Garmin wed site.

2. You can order and SD card from Garmin that contains the latest updates for your unit.

Thx Tom.

I use (depend on) the 545 every day. If there is any way to screw up formatting SD cards...I can do it.
OEM plug n play card is for me. Thankyou.
