[A portion of this article has unfortunately been lost. The author is describing a problem in transferring data between a Garmin data card and a Garmin 498 instrument--jimh]

I´ve sent all the charts and 4 routes I needed to the data card.

When I inserted the data card in the [Garmin], all the charts were loaded, but the routes were not. Other problem I have been facing is that I am unable to save the routes from the [Garmin] to my data card.

When I try to access the Data Card tab, the option are blocked. How do I send routes from my data card to the [Garmin] and how do I save data from the [Garmin] to the data card?

Many thanks in advance,

RBJORDANBR

How did you transfer the initial four routes to the data card? Is there another device involved besides the Garmin 498?

I have transfered the four routes using MapSource (Send to device option).

The transfer were made using garmin data card reader. No other device was involved.

Thanks

If I understand correctly, you placed the data card into a card reader-writer device (which is also made by Garmin and should be compatible), connected that device to a computer, and transferred files from your computer or from a CD-ROM volume onto the data card. Then you remove the data card from the reader-writer, insert the data card into the Garmin 498, and attempt to transfer the files to the file system on the Garmin. The problem occurs in the last step. The Garmin operating system does not show the data card as a source for transferring the files. Did I get that right?

Did you format the card?

Jimh,

I think you did. The problem is that the GPS system loads only the charts.

The routes and tracks are not loaded, even though when I plug the data card into the writer-reader Garmin Mapsource gets from the card all the routes.

I have formated the card.

When you place your Garmin memory stick in the reader and use Map Sources "Find a Device" function does Map Source recognize it as your 498?

When I purchased my Garmin 168 I also purchased the Mapsource software. I recently upgraded to the Garmin 545s . After I formatted my card my Mapsource software failed to recognize the Garmin 545s. I upgraded my Mapsource software for free http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209 . My software now recognizes my Garmin 545s with options for exchanging maps, routes, waypoints and tracks. I will not know if my Mapsource software will actually make the transfer of information until I Pull the cover off the boat in the spring.
I do not have a "Garmin" card reader.

Tom,

It does not recognize my data card as my 498. It recognizes it as data card reader.

Is that my problem? What do I have to do in order for mapsource recognize it as my 498?

Thanks!

Seems like I was told today when asking about a similar issue, Garmin said it either overwrites the waypoint onto your Garmin by adding the new chip files or over writes them permanently if you choose.

I would call Garmin for sure...

Did you upgrade your Mapsource software?

Yes, I did. It was useless.

There must be a way to make mapsourse see the data card as the GPS unit. I just do not know how. Does anyone know?

Place the data card in your 498 prior to turning it on after it fully boots remove it and place it back in your reader. During the boot process it should format your card.
