I have been looking at a possible purchase of one of a [Clarion CMD6, 5, 4a , or 4] and have yet to figure out the differences of each model. If someone knows, please jump in. Also, either here or some other place, I saw a pic--of course can't remember where--of one of these units installed in a center console but not on the face of the center console but where you open the door. Evidently a face plate was put up high in the doorway and the unit installed that way. Anyone seen this pic? What the plate is and where it came from sounds like it may have been starboard or plastic it was definatly white.. Any help would greatly be appreciated. I do think one of the differences was MP3 CD plays, IPod, and SIRUS/XM, as well as wireless controls.

Cmd4 has all the bells and whistles but does not play mp3 discs
Cmd5 plays mp3 discs
Cmd6 is out in April and has USB and bluetooth enhancement
The cmd5 will come way down in price in the next few months as it is not the flagship of the line any more and is the value buy here.

Glen, thank you, you are always a wealth of information. I am still trying to figure out where I saw that pic that showed a installed unit as you opened the cc door on the upper part inside. I guess it was not a plate Clarion used. I actually touched one today and man that thing is solid and put together like a tank! Have not gotton to the [decision] of which speakers and where I would put them on my Nantucket, but at four ways at 200 it is a nice to have for sure. I love the idea of playing MP3 disks,iPods, XM, and Sirus any time I want, and even the remote sounds like fun:)

Let me know if you track down that photo. Thanks Henry

Anytime Henry. The other major change that occurred from the 4 to the 5 is the 5 carries an all stainless chassis that is much more corrosion resistant than the 4. Not needed in a dry install, but necessary if you are mounting in a damp area.

We make polished acrylic faceplates all the time for CMD5's if necessary to cover a hole. Email me if you want.

It amazes me that everything Clarion makes is so good except their speakers, and they really are bad.

Thnaks Glen, what speakers would you recommend for this unit and yes, I'll email you on the face plate just not sure where I would place this and the speakers depending on whcih ones even. Originally thought about a Poly Planner MZ100 but have since realized I want something like the 5. Ill email you on the plate. Thanks once again:)Henry

Yiddil-is this the pic you are looking for? It's the factory radio installation on my 2008 Montauk 170.

SC!!! Thats the one!!!! GEEEZE! I saw it, then lost it, and could not find it....

Okay here are my questions....

where did you get that insert for the doorway of the CC?

Is it custom for you boat or do they make it to adjust to a differnet CC?

what does "factory radio installation" mean?

Do you have any more pics of wehat it looks like(maybe inside, speakers etc...)

Thinking of doing one in a Nantucket...

Glad you posted...it was driving me nuts!

Glen gave me lots to think about...

Thnaks in advance for you responses...you can also email me...Henry

I have also been looking at the CMD5 unit to replace my older Clarion head unit. I have seen the CMD4 as low as $130 new on E-bay, and $175 or so elsewhere on the net. The CMD5 still goes for $379 at Crutchfield, but can be easily had for $200 or so on Amazon. It may drop a little below that when the CMD6 comes out, but probably not that much. One other difference between the units is the CMD5 is rated at 21 WPC RMS vs only 17 WPC RMS for the CMD4. This would make a difference if you don't plan on using another Amp. Expect to pay full freight of around $400 for the CMD6 when it comes out.

check out this new black box unit for clarion. I think this will sell very well - you really don't need a CD anymore..shipping May 1 - street price $280 or so..

Yiddil-

What I meant by "factory installation" is that is how Whaler mounts the stereo in the boat from the factory. I dont know what other models you could graft that to, but I do know it comes "factory" in the Montauk 170. They include the wired remote, placed to the right of the throttle.

I don't have any other pictures of the speakers, but they mout on either side of the console.

Glen-- I like that unit. You are right; CD's are useless in a boat. I wish they could use that massive remote I have to house the controls.

SC, Yes I agree but the a cd with 125 MP#s is a nice addition to any music box:)

Getting back to "Factory Installed"...then I guess I would either have to fabricate something or call a BW dealer for that part....whats this "Factory" face thing made of? Plastic or STarboard? what does it attach to? and how? Looks like two screws...Let me know...thanks henry

But a 2G USB thumb drive with 1500 MP3's is nicer.....

wow! 500! Man thats a lot of music. I am seeing the 5 go for 200-235 right now so I'm just going to have to decide when to jump in and pic one up...while I am waiting, I guess I try and decifer speakers, installs, and types...

Any specific recommendations? Did I hear that right, the IPOD rca is an additional unit? or does it come with the head set?

Listen to the same song saved as a full size WAV file, then compare it to an mp3. No comparison. A lot of folks don't know what they're missing. WAVs take up alot of space, but nowadays you can get so much more memory for very little cost.

for small whalers the 6.5 JL coaxial because they sound great with no amp and last a long time - about 235 a pair street price...

I don't think you will see it go much lower, at least for the balance of 2009, especially when the CMD6 is $400. I still see the CMD4 posted new from $160-$250 and that unit is much older. I just purchased a CMD5 new for $199. I wanted something in now and not worry about installing something in the middle of the season. Perhaps you could save $10 or $20 waiting things out.
Yiddil posted 04-02-2009 06:47 PM ET (US)     Profile for Yiddil  Send Email to Yiddil
TransAm, thats how I felt about it...its not really going to make a difference 10-20 bucks...but 400. vs 200, thats nice savings and I dont see that big a difference...

NOw I need to find those speakers on sale:))to go with it....

I built a mounting bracket out of plywood, painted it white and hung it from the top of the console of my Montauk in exactly the same location. Looks just as good. I'd Never seen this picture. Looks a lot like what I have. Used scrap. Only expense was a can of white paint.

Henry, you really need to sit an evaluate how you will be listening to your radio most before dropping more on speakers than your head unit. I'm sure the $235 JL co-ax's sound good, but for half that or a bit more, there are decent options from Alpine, Sony, Infinity, etc. And when conditions are not optimal (listening while under power, or out of your boat with other activities, the differences between the JL's and others shrinks considerably. Since everyone's ear is different, you might try stopping by a West Marine to listen to a few. But don't buy there-they are horrendously expensive-for EVERYTHING, especially audio (they still sell the CMD5 for over $350)
TransAm posted 04-02-2009 10:33 PM ET (US)     Profile for TransAm  Send Email to TransAm
P.S. The JL 650's can be had for $199. $400 for that system and I think you're in good shape!

glen e posted 04-03-2009 03:11 AM ET (US)     Profile for glen e  Send Email to glen e
JL's are expensive because:
1. they sound very good
2. they do not "weather" in the outdoors - very UV resistant
3. they don't break and if they do, JL replaces them if you are buying from an authorized dealer
4. Did mention they sound good?

I have owned Infinity, MB quart, JBL, Sony and Alpine over the years, none can hold a candle long term to a JL. Thats' why Intrepid, SeaVee, Yellowfin and virtually every other high end mfr uses them.

Go hold one in your left hand and inspect it's build quality. Now put any other in your right hand. You'll see.

TransAm posted 04-03-2009 06:48 AM ET (US)     Profile for TransAm  Send Email to TransAm
Indeed, however most can't/won't see the difference at the same level, or that will matter much to them. I own a Land Rover. Most don't see the difference in it and a Jeep. Go down the list. Fine wine, Clothes, etc. Personally, I'd pull the trigger on the $199 JL's.
Yiddil posted 12-11-2009 08:49 PM ET (US)     Profile for Yiddil  Send Email to Yiddil
In case anyone is interested CMD is down to 229 new and the JDL speakers are an astounding 166. Now we are talking :)

I picked up both the Clarion CMD 5 and the JL Audio M650, each for $199 last April. You can get the MX650 (a little less beefy than the M650) for $150 if you shop hard. The CMD6 is now under $300.

Where did you buy yours TransAM? was it refurbed? Still looking for that elusive good deal on the CMD5 (New)

By the way, I spoke to Sue yesterday about the factory install items that SD Joe posted a pick for. I kind of like the idea of not cutting a hole in thr CC front but I am not positive yet how I will proceed.

But the cost of that unit installed by BW was a lot of money!!

Black Dog said he would help me install it this spring so Im still shopping around:)But I really had thought of doing it another way with the Poly-planner 100...but Im still on the fence here...cause I liked what Glen said about it and some you others who like the unit:)

Just saw a new product called FUSION. Really like the way they are made for marine use. Much less metal in the construction. Do not have details here at home but worth a look.

Unfortunately for all you bargain hunters they are not likely to be deeply discounted for a while.

Henry--unfortunately, most of the CMD5 stock is gone from retailers who have moved on to the CMD6. Earlier this year, after the CMD6 was made available, the CMD5's were everywhere at very attractive prices. You may still find some online or ebay, but do note whether the items are refurbished or new.

I purchased the JL Audio speakers from this outfit http://www.hifisoundconnection.com/Shop/Control/fp/tcat/131816/SFV/ 30046/set_num/2 for just under $200, the same price they are offering now. Although I purchaed the "MX650" model speakers, they sent me the heavier, more robust "M650" model speakers. In any event, $200 is not bad for the MX650's.

You will periodically see an outfit called DealerCostCarAudio advertise in the area above here in the Small Boat Electrical section. Although they advertise very attractive pricing, I would recommend you steer clear of them. My experience is documented here in another thread and is echoed by many if you Google "Dealer Cost Car Audio Scam".

Whats all thsi i hear about only buying from a authorized dealer to insure warrenty of the unit for 2 years??? of course you have to spend double the price...

SOmeone tell me what thats all about and whats the best way to proceed..seems like a lot of extra money to buy at full price ...should we be looking at something not on the up and up from an ebay seller or another site???

what gives?

If I can jump in on this thread ...

When I bought it 3-1/2 years ago, my '95 Outrage 21 had an old, rusting, non-functioning stereo on its console. Though I don't listen to music much out on the water, I'd like to replace it. Don't want to spend an arm and a leg, just something decent that can interface to iPod, or maybe memory sticks.

There isn't a lot of free room on the console, so it would have to fit within a traditional car-stereo footprint (I see the Clarion CMD5's control panel, for example, spreads a considerable distance vertically from the chassis). The existing unit had a detachable face; you can see it with the face removed at lower center in this shot:

http://www.inkbox.net/whaler/console.jpg

Black would fit my color scheme better than, say, white. Any suggestions on units to look at?
